A man who was carrying an air rifle in an Ohio Wal-Mart told the police officers that fatally shot him that the gun was not real, according to a family member.
John Crawford was shot by police Tuesday evening at a Beavercreek store. The Ohio attorney generals office announced Thursday that he was merely carrying a brand of air rifle that Wal-Mart sells.
Another shopper, 37-year-old Angela Williams, collapsed and died as she scrambled to get away after police fired at Crawford.
The shooting occurred after police responded to 911 calls about a man carrying a rifle. In one of those calls, which was released by police, a Wal-Mart shopper told emergency dispatchers that it looked like the man later identified as Crawford was trying to load the rifle and that he had pointed it at two children, WHIO reported.
The 911 callers wife said that Crawford was on the phone and that he was messing with the gun. She said that after police ordered Crawford to put down the unidentified weapon, I heard two shots after I saw him turn. He still had the weapon in his hand.
But Crawfords family says that there is no way he intended to harm anyone that night.

Simple. The command made no sense to him. So he froze.
Suppose you are standing on a sidewalk holding a can of Pepsi. And a cop with a drawn gun runs up to you and yells "put that hand grenade down!"
Are you more likely to immediately put down the can of Pepsi, or are you more likely to be confused and freeze?
I'll tell you something right now. Most folks would freeze. And so I suppose that most folks would then get shot.
This news anchor thinks people should be able to shoot anyone carrying a rifle, pointed at them or not:

Details, details...
You mean: Rumors, rumors...
The woman was not shot at all. She evidently had a heart attack as she ran from the store.
The local newspaper isn’t getting the story straight at all. This from someone who has family on that police force and an additional force.
No, the woman was not shot.
“Remind me not to carry guns in Wal Mart”
Remind me never to buy a gun, even a real gun, at Wally World that I have to carry out to my car. They do sell guns, you know...rifles and shotguns. And ammo for them too!
The woman who claims to be Crawford’s girlfriend and was on the phone with her, also claims to be the mother of: a one year old, a four month old, and claims to be pregnant with baby number three, all by Crawford. At the same time another woman who claims to be his girlfriend was there at the store, the next aisle over while he was on the phone with the “other” girlfriend. Any way you look at it this guy had problems.
That ‘lily white community” story was a lie. The community is home to a mosque under construction, a Hindu community center, a university that most certainly is multi-ethnic in it’s faculty as well as it’s student body, and the area’s largest employer, an Air Force base with a very diverse 13,000 civilian payroll. There has always been bus service to these locations.
That does not make sense and is inconsistent with what was reported.
If ya wanted cops to kill you, would you be playing video games just prior to this?
In addition the person on the phone with the victim said she overheard the victim tell the cops the rifle was not real just prior to the shooting.
Why would someone who wanted to be killed by cops say and do things that do not support this?
I don't know what all that means. So the guy has a litter of kids for different people? My comments were based on the incident as reported in the story. Not about his off spring..
As someone with family in local law enforcement, I can tell you the local Cox owned media isn’t getting the story straight at all.
Three kids in less than a year and two girlfriends about to find out about each other aren’t enough to make somebody think about suicide?
I have no idea what all that has to do with suicide or this incident as reported here.
What's your families version of the event? Were they all witnesses/involved?
They scared her to death?
That’s contributory.....if they were regular citizens...
The family member is an officer on that force and their version of the event involves Crawford’s behavior, the facts are being distorted by the local media, especially the newspaper.
Same here.
Only the aisle full of ‘fitness’ stuff separates the two.
What a junky, fake looking piece of crap that is.
