The Ontario County (N.Y.) Sheriff's Department is investigating an incident at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park involving NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Tony Stewart which occurred on Saturday evening.
At approximately 11:30 p.m., a spokesman for the department said it had no comment at this time but said a news release would be prepared and available in "two to three hours."
Posts on the social media sites Facebook and Twitter, including photographs, indicate Stewart was involved in an on-track incident with driver Kevin Ward, which left Ward on the track receiving treatment for what were described as serious injuries.

People (who could see it better) said the guy got out of his car and was gesturing angrily at Tony Stewart when Tony Stewart came by during the next lap under yellow, Willis said in a phone interview. He approached him and evidently when he was driving by the guy standing on the track gesturing at him, he gunned his engine.
What happened was the back end kicked out and clipped the guy and the guy flew across the track.
Graves said Stewart swerved before gunning the engine but did not believe it was intentional.
Unconfirmed reports via Twitter that young Mr Ward has passed.
Prayers for the family.
.........
Of course, as can be expected, rumors are flying wildly about what happened. Everything from Tony hit him intentionally, to Tony was running to avoid him as he charged between cars.
I imagine there’s video in this modern age. Hopefully it’s clear.
NASCAR will probably suspend him the rest of the season at least.
If police are investigating, that doesn’t sound too good for Tony.
That’s terrible.
Today? How about never again?
Tony pinched him into the front stretch wall, a racing thing, Tyler Graves, a friend of Kevins and fellow sprint car racer told The Sporting News. The right rear tire went down, he spun on the exit of (Turn) 2. They threw the caution and everything was toned down. Kevin got out of his car. He was throwing his arms up all over the place at Tony for most of the corner.
I know Tony could see him. I know how you can see out of these cars, he added. When Tony got close to him, he hit the throttle. When you hit a throttle on a sprint car, the car sets sideways. It set sideways, the right rear tire hit Kevin, Kevin was sucked underneath and was stuck under it for a second or two and then it threw him about 50 yards.
Sounds real bad.
Max Papis is driving for Stewarts car tomorrow (today). CONFIRMED.
Still no confirmation on Ward’s condition. It doesn’t sound good. I wonder if he is related to Roger Ward.

Video.
Watch at your own risk.
Helmet was on. He charged towards Tony. Rest is inconclusive as video frame danced about.
I’m not a doctor, but the victim looked as if he was killed instantly.
He did, but it looks like Tony gunned hit.
swerving and gunning the engine are intentional acts and the guy has been driving long enough to know what will happen
For reference.
Quick view of a Sprint car from the right side.
Ever seen those stickers on a semi... if you can’t see me I can’t see you...
Stewart didn’t duck below him like the first car, gunned the engine, and seemed to be traveling at a higher rate of speed.
This man should no better than a 17 yr. old teenager and I think he’s going to find out the very hard way.
Tony won’t race because of what happened. Don’t try to play NASCAR Official unless You can prove that You are one.
I will not get into any arguments about this.
I was not there and don’t think You were so let’s both reserve judgement based off of 1 video at this time please.
Prayers out to the Kevin Ward Family and Tony as well.
Agreed
We need and most likely will get different angles of this.
I’m still in shock........
Stewart’s no stranger to anger and lack of self control. I doubt he actually intended to injure him, let alone kill him, but his actions appear to have been aggressive to the point of more than just questionable.
