The Ontario County (N.Y.) Sheriff's Department is investigating an incident at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park involving NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Tony Stewart which occurred on Saturday evening.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., a spokesman for the department said it had no comment at this time but said a news release would be prepared and available in "two to three hours."

Posts on the social media sites Facebook and Twitter, including photographs, indicate Stewart was involved in an on-track incident with driver Kevin Ward, which left Ward on the track receiving treatment for what were described as serious injuries.

OK

EMT/Investigator/Coroner/DA/Defense/Judge/Jury/Bailiff and Executioner.

Too bad you were not around to send Me to the Firing Squad for that $52.50 NSF check I had 20 years ago.

Just think of ALL the money and time you could have saved the World.

One of the things I learned growing up on dirt tracks was to never approach a Sprint car from the right side... kind of like never approaching a horse from behind.

I saw nothing to indicate intent. The video cuts away as Tony approaches, then swings back. Unless you can see his 50 or so feet before the accident there’s no way to draw the kinds of conclusions many are espousing here.

Rumor has it Tony runs a go pro in his dirt cars... I have to assume if he did tonight that the sheriff has it. It would certainly provide some clarity about things.

It’s without question a tragedy, but I’m still in wait and see mode regarding Tony’s part in this. There’s not nearly enough evidence yet.

Lot of witnesses saying Tony revved up his engine before running his car towards the guy. You can’t see it in the Deadspin video but there’s bound to be more video released online soon. Stewart in some serious s**t.

Uncomfirmed (repeat unconfirmed) eyewitness - Timothy Burke

“WAS AT SPEEDWAY AND RIGHT NEAR TONY STEWARTS RACE HAULER.AFTER HE CAME IN HE HAD THE CREW CHAGE HIS RIGHT REAR TIRE .THEY ENDED UP PUTTING A LEFT ONE ON. COPS WERE TOLD ABOUT IT SO HOPEFULLY THEY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. HE ALSO HAD A GO PRO CAMERA ON HIS CAR HOPEFULLY THEY CONFISCATE THAT ALSO BEFORE THAT GETS DESTROYED. HEARD THE YOUNG DRIVER DIDN’T MAKE IT AND I HOPE IT’S NOT TRUE BUT THEY WOULDN’T BRING TONY OUT UNTIL ALL OTHER HAULERS WERE GONE .ALOT OF POLICE AROUND HIS HAULER ALONG WITH HIS PERSONEL SECURITY. HOPE IF THIS IS ALL TRUE WHAT HAPPENED ON THE TRACK THAT HE DOESN’T GET AWAY WITH IT. HE FINALLY LET HIS TEMPER GET THE BEST OF HIM.......”

I would not have expected them to take him into custody tonight in any event...would you? It seems like an incident that will take a LOT of investigation to make a case (if there is one to be made).

Bizarre and terrible situation to say the least, and I doubt Stewart will survive it from a public relations standpoint no matter the outcome of any criminal investigation.

I like Nascar and am a weird person in that I watch most of the races but don’t actually have a favorite driver. I’m from Iowa, so know quite a few people who race/sponsor Sprint cars down in Knoxville. I was telling my husband and a couple of his friends who were over about this...and everyone had the same reaction...wondering (yet again) WTH Stewart is doing racing at that level? He painted a target on himself (financially at least) and just got blown up.

Hasn’t Tony gotten into some road rage punching with other Nascar drivers on the track?

You always put on two left rear tires to load a Sprint car into the hauler.
The right rear is much larger.
Swapping the tires balances the car and also makes it thinner.

It’s an everyday normal activity.

Also, if he did have a go pro, and the sheriff sent him on his way, what should that say about what that video showed?

Used to go to the Knoxville sprint car races as a kid back in the mid 70s with my uncle and grandpa in Carlisle. I remember rooting for a guy named Wolfgang.

Doug Wolfgang.
Great driver.
Hall of fame sprint car pilot.
And a good guy to boot... I’ve met him.
Pretty sure he’s still alive, just retired.

Must be the guy. Frankly, I remember the pork tenderloin sandwiches more than I do the racing.

That’s just the report. Don’t shoot the messenger.

Btw - I think it’s very callous to state “an everyday normal activity” in light of a DOA.

Furthermore, a DA will determine a chain of evidence from any and all recordings. Usually, I’d wait about a week for charges if any (longer with higher profile cases). A sheriff’s release means nothing under these circumstances as the usage of expert testimony/findings/examination would be required.

The every day normal activity is putting a spare left on the right side to load the car into the trailer. I said that because the tweet casting this as suspiciousis clearly from someone wwho’s never loaded a sprint car. It’s not suspicious.. it normal. Every day normal.

There will be a multitude of videos popping up from a variety of sources, from other drivers with a GoPro to fans in the stands holding up their mobile. It will be difficult to conceal any questionable behavior, and it will be difficult to claim this was intentional if it was not. However, given Stewart’s reputation for hotheadedness, it will haunt him on and off the track. People will never forget his running down another driver.
