I suppose it should come as no surprise for those of us used to MS's limp "support" policies, after January of 2016 they plan to drop the company's older versions of MSIE, apparently to 'encourage' everyone to 'upgrade'

I can’t even get IE to load on my 8.1 computer, I have no idea what happened to it.

8.1 happened to it, damn it. I’m sitting here remote supporting it across the fruited plain for 26 more minutes. It made me grab a beer early tonight.

The latest version of the ‘doze OS I have on any of My personal machines is XP, specifically for compatibility purposes since all the high-end CAD and Prototyping software I have access to runs on the ‘doze platform. I’m not even certain that IEv11 will install, let alone run, on XP.

everytime i have had update problems from msquish, its been b/c of a damn ie update. You're not the only one, mate. I have it turned off on all personal machines that (dual-)boot the 'doze OS, and strongly suggest to customers that they do the same.
Although I did start a thread not too long ago about how a recent 'upgrade' from MS was proving remarkably helpful for many and even considered running it on the machines here for that very reason.

Switched to Firefox (Waterfox 64bit) when XP support ran out - never looked back.

Havent used IE since Firefox came out.... No regrets. Likewise.
And haven't used Windoze since Vista was announced. It sucked so bad that I took the opportunity to go Mac. Haven't looked back. These days, my PC is a Mac, and my work machines (dozens) are Ubuntu, except for the company accounting server, which is still Windows (sigh!).
Rumor has it that IE greatly improved with the introduction of version 9. But I wouldn't know, since the latest version of Windows I have is XP, and it won't run IE 9.

Very strange to turn off an XP computer and see the update message. Happened on a desktop and laptop recently. (post April)
XP, Win7, Win8.1 here. Ubuntu coming soon. Have 4-port KVM switch.

I’m guessing that’s the primary reason MS is going this route, to force more users to ‘upgrade’ to a newer version of their ‘doze OS.
Note that you can probably still continue using your installed version of IE past that date, you simply will not be getting any more upgrade patches so security issues will begin going unresolved unless the ‘nix community finds a problem and fixes it.
Which, actually, they have been doing for quite some time.
Try Opera. What could it hurt? www.opera.com.

I dual-boot, running Linux as primary with XP as secondary for certain legacy apps that need to run under the ‘doze platform.
Run Opera on both OS’.

I haven’t used vista and never will... I will say that I’ve been very pleased with Windows 7 ultimate. I have a very high end gaming system and it handles everything very nicely.
