'Some say that it is a miracle, while others are calling it a curse': Tunisian journalist

Tunisians are enjoying escaping the heat of summer by swimming in the mystery lake. (Pic @ Instagram) Nobody knows how, when or why… yet. The fact is, a lake has mysteriously appeared suddenly in the middle of Tunisian desert.

No scientific explanation has been forthcoming as yet for for ‘Gafsa Beach’, discovered by shepherds three weeks ago.

Authorities have issued a warning, according to a report in the Independent, that the water, which started off a crystalline blue and has since turned a murky green with algae, could be carcinogenic.

However, a YouTube video uploaded shows Tunisians enjoying a swim in the new lake, escaping the current 40 degrees celsius heat.

"Some say that it is a miracle, while others are calling it a curse," journalist Lakhdar Souid told France 24.

Some geologists believe seismic activity may have caused groundwater to rise to the surface by disrupting the water table.

Observers estimate the water covers an area of about 2.6 acres and measures more than 50 feet at its deepest points.

Unfortunately, if you go visit it, the in-flight movie is “The English Patient.”

2.6 acres is NOT a lake. It’s a medium size pond.

Nope. It’s one of them Acme Instant Oasiseses. Kids use ‘em all the time down here in the South just to keep from having to go outside and mow the yard.

There are several instances in the region where very intermittently, there is a powerful storm that dumps a deluge of rain, much of which is channeled through a single, deep, but normally dry wash to a normally dry depression many miles away, and far away from the original storm.

And boom, instant lake.

I thought these things in the middle of the desert were called an oasis. Bit of a stretch to call 2.6 acres a “Huge Lake”.

On second glance, never mind. Our educated Geographic Specialists have already identified this ‘lake’ as a mass produced hypnotic Mirage//

In most states the EPA would call it illegal and be looking for someone to fine and sue.

Neat. The second and more interesting question is whether/how long it stays around.
