76/77/78 was a cold stretch that could repeat.

I am keeping my eye on the water temperatures of the great lakes. Here is Lake Superior:

Due to the ice cover last winter, the lakes have not had much time to store energy from the sun this summer. It doesn't look like it will completely recover from last winter. They may freeze over faster this winter, and freeze completely. This may aid a colder great lakes winter, and will certainly cut off lake effect snows.

In my many decades of life, I’ve always found one really cold winter to be followed by at least one more. One really hot summer to be followed by at least one more.

The last time this happened on the cold side was 77/78, iirc.

So, I’d start collecting firewood now. I’d also lock in a propane contract now.

I had 51 here in southern Ohio just an hour ago. This week and next week are normally the very hottest of the year around here.
