I no longer use Microsoft Internet Explorer, MS has pretty much destroyed that product. I now use Google Chrome.
This morning, on two separate computers, Chrome has thrown a false malware warning for Free Republic (the pings url, to be specific). Apparently, 'secretsofthefed.com' is defined as a Malware site, and somehow, my pings has that in the list somewhere. Thusly, it is throwing a Malware lockout. You can get past it, but it is annoying and unnecessary, and would prevent less-savvy users from going to FR.
This MAY be happening only for those users who happen to have that website (www.secretsofthefed.com) cited in their ping list, or it may be for everyone. We shall see.
This is just a heads up service for anyone getting this result, and a technical note for the administration here.
Maybe there is something nasty on your USB flash drive? Or by logging into google you are taking something everywhere you go? Or are you logging into Facebook? I’ve seen Facebook run Windows processes. Check your Windows task list for processes or services running - cancel one by one until the problem goes away. Chrome can run pages in the background - explore the Chrome settings more. Maybe your employer is watching everything you do with a plug-in they don’t understand? Is your spouse tracking you? Do you have multiple personalities, maybe one called Arnold who does not trust you?
I have overlooked something - what is ‘secretsofthefed.com’ and what does that site have to do with FreeRepublic?
I am running FireFox 30.0 on Linux Mint version 16 “Mate” (32-bit) and have never encountered any problems.
Reloading the original thread does not solve it, I have to go to the newly-displayed thread to reply.
Chrome? A Google product? Wow! You do know that Google is a communist company, do you not?
Edited the Preferences-Security menu to uncheck “Block reported attack sites”, after which I was able to access the site no worries.
I use Opera, no problemo.
Yes, I had to keep trying before my posts would go through. Hitting "Reply" reloaded the thread page.
I use Chrome and didn’t have any problems this morning on my desktop.
But I don’t have that website bookmarked.
Someone probably linked to an image on that thread and google doesn’t like the linked site.
Well, at least I’m not the only one. The other threads work OK, it’s just this one that has the problem.
It did this to me too.
Laz.....just a suggestion when you use chrome. (I don’t use it much)
Chrome has browser extensions that get loaded, often without your input like “safe price” and other crud. In that way they are no different then IE.
Take a look.
While you are there, take a look at your basic browser setting as well.
Odd that it would affect only this thread though.
Probably. Check Utilizer’s posts on this thread; he’s getting Malware warnings in Firefox.
It’s very disconcerting that Google’s tentacles are so deep that they can stop another company’s browser (Firefox, in this case) by their say-so.
Makes me wonder how deep they are into the web, and if they could shut lots of people down with the flick of a switch, no matter what browser you use.
Travis: I think you were looking in the wrong area when you postulated the possibility of a ‘second internet’. Google was able to shut down (or at least slow down) access to a website even with a competitor’s browser. Think ahead to the next level and what they could achieve.
*ahem* “an” expert, not “and” expert. Need to proofread more thoroughly before posting.
I think it also important to point out that this is occurring in the firefox browser -on the Linux OS. The vast majority of malware affects the ‘doze platform, not the various ‘nix or BSD offerings so the “malware” warnings are mostly an irritant rather than a benefit of sorts.
Today, Firefox voluntarily uses Google's "Bad Website" list, and with both Chrome and Firefox, getting by this warning is trivial.
Tomorrow, Obama could Executive Order that all browsers use Google's "Bad Website" list, and that getting by the block is impossible.
It has happened to me before several times.
Just a glitch I suppose.
