Word For The Day, Wednesday, July 16, 2014-- oriflamme
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
oriflamme [awr-uh-flam, or-]
noun
1. the red banner of St. Denis, near Paris, carried before the early kings of France as a military ensign.
2. any ensign, banner, or standard, especially one that serves as a rallying point or symbol.
Origin
142575; late Middle English oriflam < Middle French oriflamme, Old French, equivalent to orie golden (< Latin aurea, feminine of aureus, derivative of aurum gold) + flamme flame
History
sacred banner of St. Denis, late 15c., from O.Fr. orie flame, from L. aurea flamma "golden flame." The ancient battle standard of the kings of France, it was of red or orange-red silk, with two or three points, and was given to the kings by the abbot of St. Denis on setting out to war. Cotgrave says it was "borne at first onely in warres made against Infidells; but afterwards vsed in all other warres; and at length vtterly lost in a battell against the Flemings." It is last mentioned in an abbey inventory of 1534.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
I saw this in an article on another thread and all I can say is “DUH!”...
“The mayor reasoned that L.A. was a good place for sheltering the illegal aliens because their parents are probably in the Los Angeles area.”
LOL!
I have a Gadsden flag decal on the window of my 4x4-even the convenience stores in this county are selling them now. I just have Old Glory and the Texas flag on the driveway gate, but I see all kinds of oriflamme choices on the gateposts out here...
The oriflamme of choice
For most of the population
Is the one that Americans
Chose to fly as a nation
Time goes by, so what we fly
On our fences, gates and such
Under Old Glory, as statements
Often bears an ironic touch-
Texas flags, and Gadsdens,
Stars and bars on a staff-
Sometimes even a jolie rouge
An irony to make us laugh...
Excellent.

Do you own one of the 5 most dangerous guns in America?
OMG I missed it, thanks that was FANTASTIC!! should be the soundtrack to this thread! I LOVE IT! was just dancing in my seat at my desk to it!
think we got a coupla them!
I just tweeted @BryanAGarner about it! someone had already tweeted him that it should be his anthem, LOL!
Well of course I own a couple-isn’t “a dangerous gun” a redundant statement?
Anyone who doesn’t know more than the author of that article has no business firing a mouth, never mind a gun...
Derringers? I didn’t know those existed outside of old movies anymore.
That is absolutely hilarious! I sent it to my work compadre...
My first husband’s dad had a pair of old derringers, but they were antiques and never got fired-I’ve never seen one fired other than in movies and on TV-I would think the recoil would be hell on one’s hand...
Oh, yeah. I want to get one for my birthday. You can get them with barrels that go anywhere from a .22 mag to a .410 shotgun slug.

Here is one in .38 special or .40 S&W.

Maybe someday we’ll have a real president and all the felons from this administration will be wearing orange jump suits. (Keep dreaming!)

Wow! Some great anagrams, sir!

Nice poem. How long before we’re flying the Hammer and Sickle or one of those Muslim crescent thingies?
Thank you!
Not where I live-ever-if that was ever required, I would go down in flames gladly...
