I have been able to do many (free) basic repairs on bikes in this poor inner city, thank God, but now my neighbor needs a new rear wheel for a BMX bike as the old rim was run over by a car. It has the smaller type sprocket on both the crank ("chainring?") and the rear wheel, and when i tried to put the old hub in a freewheel rim then it would not fit. And with the smaller type crank then a the larger, standard type rear sprocket is not feasible.
I have looked a lot online, and see many 20'' wheels at places such as Niagara Cycle , but evidently they do not come with the sprocket/cogset, and I see no description that tells (ignorant) me what will hub and cogset fit.
The old one looked like this one i saw on ebay, the best i can see. Could i place the hub from one such as that on a wheel like this?
Thanks for any advice and corrections any would give.
We also do not have a local WalMart here. Closest similar would be a Costco but it is about 75 miles away from here. Plus, a new wheel should not cost significantly more than the cost of the bicycle itself, I believe.
Sorry. the terminology is not precise. I do not want to rebuild the wheel with the spokes, but place the hub and microdrive 9th sprockett/cogset into a new wheel, but which must be the one with the larger center. .
As for the hub, is it a cassette freehub with a 9t gear or is the 9t cog a freewheel in itself?
All i know is that it is single speed, i took it apart, and it unscrews into 3 basic parts with the sprocket attached at one end, and a somewhat flexible 3'' cylindrical piece at the other, plus bearings in a cup and nuts. And that this hub is too large to fit into the other hub that looks like the wheel in post 10 , but it seems post 9 looks like the one it came out of. .
The microdrive i took out did not show the cogs this one does, but from the outside it looks like it.
My advice would be buy the right type of wheel/hub combo (Freewheel or Freehub) and it should fit.
But which descriptions are hard to find where i am mainly looking .
What Huffy parts and sizes do you need?
Mostly wheels, seats, pedal mechanisms, bearings, and cables for 26” frames. Others and a couple of different sizes once I manage to repair the most necessary ones as time permits.
I did some research. You disassembled the driver. You need a cassette hub (basically a freehub without the cassette body) Size may not be common, but apparently Odyssey is the most common. I believe any BMX Cassette Hub should work, but not freewheeled. Sorry I can’t help more. It’s been a long time since I was in the industry. I am/was a factory trained mechanic in HS/College so I’m not just winging it. These days I only work on my own stuff, so I am not up to date on all the newer tweaks. The driver concept is new to me, but it is really just a component freehub.
oh, and BTW the wheel in you original post will not work.
The wheel from Ebay would most likely work, but I can’t yell if that is a fixed gear setup or a cassette and driver from the picture. The good news is it looks like it has a 9 or 10 tooth cog, so maybe you could just bolt it on.
thanks!

But i thought i had the old "hub" ( the core of a wheel; contains bearings) or it seems more specifically, the freehub (see top), and only need the right wheel to put it in.
Thanks, but which on do yo mean> The one in post 9 is from Niagara cycle.
I have tried to contact them, but they were not answering, though parts came after a week.
I would search Niagara cycle, as they seem to be about the cheapest, though slow, and good customer support does seem to be lacking.
See 26'' tires and choose size, then sort by price: low to high, and you may see such as this one for under 10.00. S+H is usualy 5.00. And no, i do not work for them.
The link I was talking about is this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sapient-Rear-Wheel-12-BMX-Bike-Tire-12mm-Axle-/141193292191?pt=US_Tires&hash=item20dfc6a99f it the ebay auction from your article at the top of the thread.
The one in 9 looks like a freewheel hub to me an that wouldn’t work. You need one that has the description of a cassette hub. The only issue may be size, but from what I read most are the same size.
Note that they usually sell these wheels without the sprocket so that it is hard to tell by the pics whether the center is large enough for the cassette hub.
However, the micro-drive wheels have a larger center as seen in the the one in #9 , and looks like this wheel which i came across (if 18'') that says it is a micro-drive, also see here .
I sent an email to Niagara Cycle about this, lets see if they can answer it, and thanks for looking into this and advice.
Ended up buying a cheap whole complete wheel, for 28 total. http://www.motiontrendz.com/parts/20-mike-spinner-pro-rear-rim.html
That was probably your best bet. Sorry I couldn’t be more help. Like I said in the beginning I would have just bought a rim and rebuilt it. The cycling world can be a real PIA with all of the different systems and sizes.
But unlike PCs , finding compatibility is not easy. Thanks again.
