A United Airlines flight carrying 348 people from Honolulu to Guam was diverted to the tiny Pacific island of Midway because of a mechanical issue, the airline said Saturday.
An electrical odor filled the Boeing 777 aircraft and the airline was reviewing the mechanical problem that caused the diversion that occurred Thursday night local time.
Midway Island a remote, 2.4-square-mile atoll is located about 1,300 miles northwest of Hawaii and was the site of an important U.S. military base during World War II. It is now home to a national wildlife refuge and has roughly 60 residents.

They had to wait while some people left Guam so the balance could be preserved.
Well, the last thing we want is for the island to “capsize.” ;-)
I always get diverted to places like Duluth, Midway would be extra cool!
I prefer Midway to O’Hare.
BRILLIANT!
“...was the site of an important U.S. military base during World War II.”
Huh. That was that thing with Hitler wasn’t it?
Maybe they blew an environmental pack. If you blow the turbine you get a lot of smoke.
LOL
LOL
I’m surprised they didn’t go through a time warp and come out at June 1942.
Anyone mention seeing the Malyasia Plane at Midway?
When did we leave Midway? I was on a plane that landed there in 1973. We also landed at Wake Island. Both of them were nail biters.
Then again, maybe I was drunk.
In 1978, the Navy downgraded Midway from a Naval Air Station to a Naval Air Facility and large numbers of personnel and dependents began leaving the island. With the war in Vietnam over, and with the introduction of reconnaissance satellites and nuclear submarines, Midway’s significance to U.S. national security was diminished. The World War II facilities at Sand and Eastern Islands were listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 28, 1987 and were simultaneously added as a National Historic Landmark.[11]
As part of the Base Realignment and Closure process, the Navy facility on Midway has been operationally closed since September 10, 1993, although the Navy assumed responsibility for cleaning up environmental contamination at Naval Air Facility Midway.

Thank you. I wasn’t drunk after all.
A truly great Twilight Zone episode. Rod Serling’s voiceover at the end also classic.
Midway was part of the 93 base closure. The military’s still on Wake.
