Word For The Day, Monday, 6/3/14
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
rident; adj. laughing; smiling; cheerful.
He flashed her a smile, but she didn't miss the fact that this rident expression did nothing to alter the bleakness in his eyes.
-- Elizabeth George, Deception on His Mind , 1997
Hetty was radiant and rident . It was quite like an evening at home at Oakhurst. Never for months past, never since that fatal cruel day, that no one spoke of, had they spent an evening so delightful.
-- William Makepeace Thackeray, The Virginians , 18571859
Origin:
Rident came to English in the early 1600s from the Latin rīdēre meaning "to laugh."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
told you i, by and large, dislike women. there are a few exceptions. and those i like despite the fact that they are women!
xsgirls and i were laughing last night after xsboy and xsfiance got back. they had a great time, it was an action packed weekend between a fishing trip, cookout and then limo to Atlantic city, then up for breakfast at some local joint called uncle bills that xsfiance is obsessed with. it was a 4 hour drive back, they got home around 10 pm. and when xsboy was ready to go upstairs bc he was beat, xsfiance followed him to the foot of our front stairs and the girls and i were in the kitchen and we heard xsfiance go in for the embrace and said how much it meant to him that xsboy went up and hung with all of his friends etc. for the weekend, and we were miming xsboy putting a gun to his head, figuring that’s what he was feeling when xsfiance went all WOMAN on him! LMAO~! so yeah, we are not only not big on women in general, but we tease womanish behavior in men ; )
I fetched some stuff for a job from Home Depot in Boerne early this AM, and it was nearly empty-cashiers lounging at their checkout stations-for a minute I thought the SHTF, until I remembered there is a holiday this week.
I doubt that Obama’s minions
Are rident over the supremes
Even the smallest smackdowns
Interfere with their dreams
I’m sure Obama wants them
In a captive audience again
So he can stamp his feet,
Take out and wave his pen
I doubt they’ve forgotten
The last time that went down,
And even those who owe him
Don’t want to hear the clown
A++++ yes, it is to be savored when there are fewer people out and about.
“one hive mind?”
Same here-there is a reason I work with men doing what is often considered a man’s work, and most of my friends are men. Of the few female friends I have, most are here at FR-I do not like or trust most women, and can’t remember a time I have...
I’m glad you are getting an influx of male emotion in your family! lol My big ole Marine gives hugs - granted not to just anyone, but watching him hold the hand of my stepfather after his stroke touched me beyond words.
i have some very good female friends. one has been my friend since we were 6 yrs old. she is currently staying with us for a few days, having left her husband of 29 yrs. it was a weekend of emotional tumult. Like i said, i just happen to like them, despite the fact they are women, not because of it.
Dave, the most normal women I know all feel this way - we all know that many women are emotional and clannish - their low self esteem means they beg to be liked or loved and they gravitate toward the alpha female, even if she is mean or cruel. For most of my life I have known that many women are weak when it comes to standing up for themselves or their beliefs. There is a reason why women like XS, Texan5 and I say that working with women is like being in 7th grade again.
oh xshub is a sap, bawls nearly as easily as i do. will be sobbing during the father-daughter dance, without ANY doubt! xsboy is more like my bro in that regard. intimacy is not easy for him. He hugs us, and his father. xsfiance, we say, is the woman in their relationship, bc xsteen is a tougher nut than he is, in many respects!
Thank you! I do so hope he has his shorts in a wad over this...
Once I realized why Home Depot was so empty, I was wishing I had more time before I had to drop the stuff on-site for tomorrow, and that I had some money to spend on stuff for things I’d like for myself-it was a rare opportunity to shop in peace and quiet...
“like being in 7th grade again.”
Yes! That is it exactly-with the queen bee (queen bitch?) at the workplace in place of the alpha female of a school clique, but it is the same hive mentality, and the little worker bees follow her lead, no matter how mean or nasty she chooses to be, because they are lacking in individual identity or confidence-weak sisters, all, and I have only contempt for anyone like that...
My best female friend has been just that since the first year of college-we text/talk often-she lives 100 or so miles away.
well to be honest the women i work with aren’t like that. our ofc is about half men and half women, but the bosses are two women. we interact as lawyers, not as genders.
That is great-I’ve never had the experience, but in my former line of work, there was a higher-then-usual number of lesbians and male homosexuals in that profession. They always seemed like caricatures of the opposite sex, especially the men.
The worst supervisor I ever had was a homosexual-he was obviously a misogynist-treated all the women like crap, acting like a jealous girl, listening to all our phone calls and reading personal e-mails. Some of us had been with the company for 6-7 years, but all of us women had gone elsewhere by the time he had been there 2 years-myself and my assistant went right to work for the biggest and best competitor, as a package deal.
I took my contact lists-I never was dumb enough to load them into the computer system-and we started kicking the former employer’s ass on insurance contracts and vocational services immediately-payback is a bitch...
“higher than usual”, dammit...
Haha! They’re grotesque.
that certainly appears to be the overwhelming opinion...
I know you are, but what am I. ;-)
And who told Megyn Kelly to wear a mullet?
