San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge moved a big step closer to getting an oft-debated suicide barrier after bridge officials on Friday approved a $76 million funding package for a net system that would prevent people from jumping to their deaths.
The bridge district's board of directors voted unanimously in favor of the funding for a steel suicide net. The funding sources are $20 million in bridge toll revenue, $49 million in federal money and $7 million from the state.
... funding for the project remained a major obstacle.
A significant hurdle was overcome two years ago when President Barack Obama signed into law a bill making safety barriers and nets eligible for federal funds.

Maybe it would be cheaper to just have 24/7 mental aid
help stationed on the bridge.
“Feeling suicidal?
Pull red lever and a councilor will be with you
momentarily...”
I’d rather you jump off the GG than a building in the financial district and maybe take someone else out with you.
kalifornia is like our achille’s heel huh?
I have a CD of a documentary about the bridge suicides. The documentary shows people jumping from the bridge. I watched until the first person jumped, and I couldn’t watch it anymore. I felt so badly for the man who jumped.
Maybe, but carrying your analogy further, would that make Washington D.C. our anus?
Like watching that guy jumping form the twin towers. Can only watch once. Sad, so very sad.
The Bay Bridge is right there. Not as iconic, sure, but if you want to kill yourself I’m sure it will do the trick. Are we going to start putting nets on all bridges?
Nothing new, they have barriers on NY high rises, Empire State building and many other locations all over...
It won’t stop people from killing themselves, but the leftist get to show they really care by spending your $$ before they embezzle it, skim the top and line their pockets...
IIRC, they do have phones that connect to suicide hotlines placed on the bridge.
They’ll just jump onto the net, climb off and there goes 76 million.
I read somewhere that the few survivors from such falls usually had the same thought as they stepped-off:
“I wish I hadn’t done that.”
If Obama will fund it.
Forty-nine million in Federal money.

I was listening to just such a survivor on KABC radio. He said that he regretted his decision as soon as he jumped. Hitting the water was like hitting concrete and he suffered all sorts of internal injuries. Really spooky and he’s extremely lucky to have survived. The guy suffered from bipolar depression and still does, but now he’s thankful for every day of life.
I’ve seen that too.
You bet, so much money all the government insiders from SF to Sacramento will be lining their pockets...No one will even notice. If they do, do like the IRS does, just tell em ya lost all the records and documents...Or make the paper trail so long and confusing, no one can figure it out..
Bonuses for everyone...
It’s called “The Bridge” and is available through Netflix.
The documentary is about those who jump off the bridge but also about those left behind and how they’ve dealt with it. Most of those who jumped were severely depressed/mentally ill and had previously attempted or threatened suicide.
I’ve looked over the side of that bridge and cannot FATHOM the state of mind someone would have to be in to jump...
In the documentary “The Bridge” an expert explains that those who survived went in feet first and at a slight angle.
76 millioh bucks to save a suicide. I am sorry but once a suicidal lands on a barrier they will just climb over it to finidh the job.
Waste of money.
