In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
canaille (kuh-NAYL, -NY) noun
The common people; the masses; riffraff.
how it sounds
Example sentence:
"The gang in the alley was not canaille; fine gentlemen from the court were raging here."
--Isak Dinesen; Last Tales; Random House; 1957.
Etymology:
From French canaille (villain, rabble), from Italian canaglia (pack of dogs, rabble), from cane (dog), from Latin canis (dog). Ultimately from the Indo-European root kwon- (dog), which is also the source of canine, chenille (from French chenille: caterpillar, literally, little dog), kennel, canary, hound, dachshund, corgi, cynic, and cynosure. Earliest documented use: 1676.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

It was announced yesterday that Obama is headed to Minnesota to connect with the canaille. Of course the real reason is that al Franken is in trouble and the big O wants to play golf.
They were running the circular firing squad on Cruz yesterday for having the audacity to congratulate his fellow senator on his election victory. It’s Santorum/Specter all over again.
the lunacy, it is extreme.
When Obama addresses canaille
His lies can be stacked in a pile
But whenever I see
Him speak on my tv
I just race to adjust the old dial
If Obama doesnt have to follow the rule of law do the canaille have to as well?
I watched “Tyrant” last night. I was interested. A lot happened in the pilot to establish everything, so we really need to see what happens next.
Telling his wife “promise me we’ll come home” was a bit anvillicious.
I thought Jamal would be around to act as a counterweight to our hero, but I guess not. He was a jerk, but I thought his comeuppance would be delayed.
I could do without the homo son.
The closed captions were a couple seconds behind, which was annoying.
I’ll watch next week to see where they go.
As a patriotic American let me firmly state that I am against any form of canaille, and I will not have it in my house. Why just yesterday my wife forced me to throw out a large stack of canaille that had been lying around for quite a while. Whew! was I glad to toss it all into the trash bin.
I had never heard that word before in my sixty-four years of life on this planet. You made me look it up.
Yeah, today’s pandering to the democrat voters’ canaille is like what these same Chicago politicians did in the 1800’s: Ship Chicago’s sewage downstream to the Ohio river so they would not pollute the water THEY were drinking!
I don’t know if it’s exactly a “word” yet, but yes, it’s a good one.
The take on this IRS fiasco and most things having to do with the ruling elite is that the Gov’t can nail the canaille, but not the reverse
