United States V Portugal thread - 6pm EDT (3pm PDT) ESPN
This is the group stage. 8 groups of 4 with the top two from each group going forward to the knockout rounds. One point for a tie and three points for a win. The US has three points with two games to go. Germany has four and Ghana one with one game to go. Portugal has no points with two games to go.
No. A tie is worth one point. It’s the two best totals among the three games.
Hopefully our conditioning gives us an advantage late.
Thanks to all for help finding US vs Portugal channel. US playing well after giving up gift goal. Their numerous attacks on goal should get back the 1 goal deficit. Hope the defense holds.
I’m counting on it. We looked more dangerous for most of the half. The big concern is a Portuguese counter attack as the US gets aggressive. We are definitely the most fit team. But look for Portugal to go into a defensive shell.
Last games’s Thursday morning vs Germany. All the Thursday games start at the same time, 9am pst.
THanks, okay, that makes sense. Thank you. Yes, we are in the next to the last group alright.
They had to take a water break, sounds like they said the first one ever in the World Cup.
Since being caught somewhat off-guard on the opening goal, Thomas has been superb.
This save could be the difference between advancing and elimination
One of the better descriptions of the game is “like an NFL two minute drill... for 90 minutes”.
And the announcers keep stating that it is 89 degrees and really humid as if this is something extraordinary for a match in Brazil, right near the equator.
A tie would give us a definite leg up on Portugal given their goal difference. I give Ghana a good shot at beating Portugal. We will need a miracle to beat the Germans or even tie them. They always seem to come up big in the big games—except when they play Italy who seems to have their number.
I wonder how they managed to play games here in Dallas in 94 with our oppressive heat.
The average player runs 8 to 10 KM a game.
One of the ESPN interviews made a big deal about Zusi’s corner kick abilities, don’t know if that extends to Free Kicks. Sounds like that was the main reason he was brought to Brazil according to the interview. They said his corners are as good or better than Donovan’s.
I thought that too, until I realized that Ghana tied them, and we beat Ghana. That doesn't prove anything, just that we can be competitive with them.
We just need a little more finesse on attack. We shoot too early. Hold it a little longer. Look for a pass. Or try to beat a man.
He's a great setu-up guy. He assisted on the second goal in the win over Ghana.
Updated: TOP, time of possession, USA 51%, Portugal 49%
Mercy, what an opportunity. That is exciting, wow.
Killing me!
