They fake their enthusiasm for soccer to prove their bona fides as “citizens of the world.”

That's the agenda...make us all 'citizens of the world'.

Will the USA win a World Cup before England?
The worry for England is that they continue to drift in the same manner as they have done for forty plus years whilst the rest of the footballing world continues to pass them by. As galling as it sounds to traditional football supporters from England, if the MLS continues to grow, and Klinsmann’s plans take flight, than it won’t be long until their special friends from the States pass them by too.

The depression came but soccer was big in the USA in the 1920s.

The Secret History of American Soccer

In the 1920s, soccer was on the cusp of becoming a major sport in the United States. Then it all crashed and burned.

In the 1920s, soccer was big in America. Not big in the way that baseball was big (this was the era of Ruth and Gehrig) or college football was big (these were the days when Ivy League rivalries played out as violent eruptions in the mud), but at its height, the top American soccer league had tens of thousands of fans, featured some of the world's best players, and looked set to challenge the fledgling NFL in the competition to supply the nation with a post-October pastime. ------------------------------

SELECT WINNERS, USA OPEN CUP

1914 May 16 Brooklyn Field Club

1915 May 1 Bethlehem Steel

1916 May 6 Bethlehem Steel

1917 May 5 Fall River Rovers

1918 May 4 Bethlehem Steel

1919 Apr 19 Bethlehem Steel

....

1928 Apr 8 New York Nationals

1929 Mar 31 New York Hakoah (Jewish club)

....

1935 Apr 28 St. Louis Central Breweries

1936 Apr 26 Philadelphia German-American

1938 Apr 17 Chicago Sparta

...

1939 Apr 30 Brooklyn St. Mary's Celtic

So actually, as opposed to what people say, it's been around forever.

USA Olympic Team, 1984

"Soccer, USA vs. Italy, Rose Bowl, Pasadena. Soccer surprisingly proved to be a very popular sport during these Olympics, with the Rose Bowl selling out many times, despite having a seating capacity of over 100,000 and Americans' usual lack of enthusiasm for the sport. This success led to the US' desire to host the World Cup in 1994, which it of course did. The Rose Bowl was also the stadium for the final game deciding the 1st place winner of the 1994 World Cup."

For the record, I actually have this game on video tape. Good game. Something about the innocence of the sport back then and our players is great. Yes, nowadays, league soccer may sometimes leave something to be desired actually as it is commercial with overpaid primadonnas.

The video itself is when the network chose to air the game but didn't even use announcers as it has done a few times with NFL teams.

As to all of this daily art of war stuff, let's remember what the slogan was for World Cup 2006 in Germany. Not sure if we have anyone from Alemania here.

Did people notice how during the Uruguay England game, how they showed fans with warpaint for both countries? They are trying to trim down on the hostile and nationalistic feelings.

... USA stands a chance of making it for the first time ever to the coveted Round Of 16.

The current Round of 16 format, with only first and second place teams advancing, began in 1998. Previously the bracket included some third place teams, i.e., 1994 with USA going down on the Fourth of July to Brazil 1-0 in the first stage of the knockout rounds. USA lost to Germany 1-0 in the quarter finals (one stage past Round of 16) in 2002 and to Ghana 2-1 in 2010. Two knockout round appearances in 4 World Cups under the new format ain't bad.

True that - especially if you live in Chicago.

USA, USA, USA

First Ghana, how about vs. Germany in the 3rd match, send 'em home!

USA shot blocked in 2002 vs. Germany. Not caught by the referees.

Real football?.

Give me a break. Rugby for girls. BTW, the rugby season is still in flow if you want to watch REAL men play each other.

Enough of this ‘swing, swing, miss, miss, hit’ nonsense. Or ‘run, hit, run, hit’. For 3-4 hrs each, dear god.

The way ESPN and Americans wet their pants over the two ‘sports’ of baseball and ‘football’ is equally nauseating.

Hell, the latter dosent need to be watched, as its superior father, rugby, is still going. Will finish in July and restart before the NFL season in Sept. And its a twofer: the major nations are all playing each other in test matches now: England, NZ, SA, Australia, France, Scotland, Wales, Argentina, Ireland.......

None of your major sports are.

Football is based on rugby, basketball was the idea of a Canadian, ice hockey Canuck again, tennis English, golf Scottish, and baseball was in fact invented in 18th C England and is based on a childrens game called rounders. Jane Austin even mentions playing ‘base ball’ in the first chapter of Northanger Abbey in 1811.

The only American sport, with a French name, is Native American.

To play TOP LEVEL soccer, like playing ANY sport at the top level, takes a mix of skill, thought and speed that few have. Again like any sport.

That’s why 1 in 10000 soccer players make it professional.

At least soccer players touch the ball. Some NFL players will play 10-15 years (and the same if not more before the NFL) and will never touch the ball.
