The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) voted Thursday to allow pastors to marry same-sex couples in states where it is legal.
The church also voted, by an overwhelming majority, to change the language about marriage in the church constitution to "two persons" from a "man and a woman," according to More Light Presbyterians, a group that supports gay rights.
To take effect, that change would need to be approved by a majority of 172 local presbyteries, which have a year to vote, the church said in a statement.
However, starting Saturday, pastors can go ahead and begin marrying same-sex couples in the states that allow it, according to Toya Richards Jackson, a church spokeswoman.
"The church affirmed all its faithful members today. This vote is an answer to many prayers for the Church to recognize love between committed same-sex couples," said Alex McNeill, executive director at More Light Presbyterians.

One of the best answers on “gay marriage” was a slip of the tongue from Ah-nold when he was first running for governor.
He was on with Sean Hannity, and Sean was firing issues at him rapid-fire and getting a brief position statement on each.
Sean: “Gay marriage.”
Ah-nold: “I think gay marriage should be between a man and a woman.”
Not a bad idea. All you gay guys, get out there and marry the lesbians.
Don’t kid yourself, the Methodists (UMC) have fallen all but technically. The latest instance of a Methodist minister “marrying” two men has gone unpunished, unconvicted, after a Church trial. Their official policy may condemn homosexual acts, but that is just a “technicality” that is all but ignored.
A sure way to know if a Christian church group is well on its way to apostasy and irrelevance as a Christian group is to determine whether they ordain women for the ministry. The Methodists did this long ago.
And they wonder why no one goes to their churches anymore. My family had been going to the same Presbyterian church for four generations. It only two miles away. Today, the congregation has shrunk to almost nothing, they had to sell the manse, and you couldn’t pay me to go.
