NATAL, Brazil The U.S. national soccer team is assured of playing three matches in the World Cup. There is Mondays Group G opener against Ghana in this surf-and-sun destination on the northeast coast, then Portugal in the heart of Amazonia and Germany in the port city of Recife.

I’d gladly take another three in the second half. Portugal look out of sorts today.
So far so good!
Best result possible for the USA is for Germany to hang a big number on ten-man Portugal. We’ll need results and goal difference to have any chance of getting out of this group.
I agree completely. I want Germany to ring it up like a pinball machine at this point.
Schweinsteiger still on the bench for Die Mannschaft. Wonder if his knee is troubling him more than the team is letting on. Of course, they hardly need him in this game. Gets a few days more rest.
With Pepe suspended and Coentrao injured, Portugal is probably down half its back four for their match against the USA as well. Maybe a break there.
I know they’re our opponent in this group but I doubt this was what Portugal had in mind.
My best case scenario had us tying Ghana and beating Portugal.
Then if we only lose to Germany by a goal, we should still get out of the group.

Sounds like a plan.
I’m looking forward to the game tonight, but I’ll miss the first half hour. Ugh!
No doubt. And Almeida injured too. They will be without three of their best players when they play the USA.
From a sporting standpoint that is too bad. From a practical standpoint, it’s an advantage.
Would somebody please tell the Germans they have a man advantage. Too much passing.
I had it the opposite. I didn't see us beating Portugal entering this (though if USA comes out of the Ghana match in good health that may well change given today's result) but see us having a better chance against Ghana. But as long as the results come I don't care who they are against.
Of course, that was your actual quote. Not really sure how that happened. LOL
I think Ghana is the bigger challenge to the US, there’s a reason they’ve beaten us the last two times.
Portugal is a one-man team.
I think part of the reason Ghana beat us last time was that Bob Bradley thought Ricardo Clark was an international player. Unfortunately.
Aaaaaaand it’s 4-0.
Ok, who here was thinking “Go ahead Ronaldo, strike the ref”.
Thomas Müller with the hat trick!
That was easy.
Refs gave the Germans a penalty, if that was a penalty, then England should have gotten one. Even Roberto Martinez said that’s not a penalty.
