Fifa investigates England 2018 World Cup bid over £35,000 payment
A payment of £35,000 by England’s 2018 World Cup bid to cover a gala dinner for Caribbean officials is being investigated by the Fifa ethics investigator Michael Garcia, it can be disclosed.

Garcia questioned England 2018 officials about picking up the bill for the Trinidad dinner during interviews in London last year as part of his investigation into bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. The dinner was part of efforts to woo the then influential Fifa vice-president Jack Warner, who has since quit football in disgrace.

How born-again midfielder Philipp Lahm is vital to Germany
Lahm’s role is going to be vital, because he’ll need to provide enough defence stability to prevent Portugal from counter attacking, whilst at other times his movement and passing around the pitch might be as vital during periods of possession as the heartbeat is to a human being.

A stunning, scarcely believable conclusion in Brasilia saw Switzerland steal victory against Ecuador in their Group E opener on Sunday, as substitute Haris Seferovic completed an end-to-end counter-attack to secure a 2-1 win for the Europeans.

And thanks to that stoppage time goal, still no draws through 11 games played. Scoring is also up over 2010 dramatically: 37 goals through 11 games vs. 16 goals four years ago.

Good morning...a somewhat related question, if I may..

The popularity of the NFL in the states is dues in great part to betting. I assume that the same exists in soccer during the WC, but on what basis. Do you get odds, say Ghana over US 3-2..or is it by goals ( like a point spread) and would you consider posting the odds on future threads..

I don't know how to post the odds, but yes, betting is very similar to NFL, though with soccer (except in elimination games that have to have a winner), you can also bet that the game will end in a tie - that would have resulted in a lot of losing bets for this World Cup so far.

As with the NFL, there are also point spread bets - with favorite teams usually giving away anywhere from a half point (or gaol) to a point and a half - and bets on whether combined goals scored by both teams will be over/under a certain total.

I think the best possible scenario for the US is for Germany to pile it on against Portugal and Ghana.

Realistically the best the US is looking at is going 1-1-1 in the three games, but if Germany takes care of Portugal and Ghana, odds are good that will be enough to get the US through.
