U.S. soccer set to open its 2014 World Cup against Ghana, an old nemesis

NATAL, Brazil — The U.S. national soccer team is assured of playing three matches in the World Cup. There is Monday’s Group G opener against Ghana in this surf-and-sun destination on the northeast coast, then Portugal in the heart of Amazonia and Germany in the port city of Recife.

SALVADOR, Brazil — Thomas Mueller scored a hat trick as Germany turned on its style and power to rout 10-man Portugal 4-0 in their World Cup Group G opener on Monday.

Mueller, who scored five goals at the 2010 World Cup, was ruthless against a weak Portugal team that was clearly outplayed.

With Chancellor Angela Merkel supporting in the stands, the German team celebrated its 100th World Cup match with a rousing victory that virtually assured by halftime.

As the resident English footy fan, I was pleased with the performance, almost certainly the best in a tournament since the halcyon days of Euro 96, but felt that we could have got a draw with a few tactical tweaks and a bit more composure.

Overall, bring on Uruguay!

Nigeria and Iran are scoreless so far.

The real heavyweights by the time of the Round Of 16 will be Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Italy.

No European team has ever won the World Cup when its been held in South America.
