Brazil got help from the ref.

There’s no way this team will win the Cup playing as they did today. Sloppy. Very unlike Brazil.

Martin O'Neill, looks a bit like John McEnroe and then, maybe not back in the day.

At Nottingham Forest.

First on reader's left with Big Head and Peter Taylor.

Has to be the Queen giving out a medal for wining in Europe.(?)

Manager at Aston Villa.

Now managing Ireland with Roy Keane as an assistant. I hope they can shape things up.

What I thought cost him the two saves was that he rose up just a bit and then settled down before making a play on the ball. If he did not have that little ‘hitch’, he could have easily saved those two goals.

The penalty call was way too harsh, and the foul on the Brazilian goalkeeper was pretty lame. Also though there was a bad foul committed by Brazil that led to the third goal.

I think the ref felt pressure with a game that Brazil was expected to win handily and favored Brazil on a number of calls in the second half.

Spain v. Netherlands should be a very good match.

The other two aren’t worth watching.

Croatia´s Kovac labels penalty ´a disgrace´

"If that was penalty, than we should play basketball, not football," Croatia's coach told HTV.

"This is a disgrace.

"If you continue like this you will have 100 penalties. I think 2.5 billion people watching on TV saw this was not a penalty.

"This was ridiculous and if we continue in this way we will have a circus."

Mexico should win over Cameroon.
Chile should win over Australia.

Though, I will record the Mexico game just in case. The Tri, Tricolor.

Spain and Netherlands may well draw.

It was a disgraceful penalty call.

I suspect the Japanese ref team was assigned this match because FIFA thought it would be a big mismatch and the ref crew would have no impact on the result. FIFA was wrong.

The best refs are all in the big European leagues and a few in South America. There might be a few in the U.S.

I’m glad from the article, the Croatian Manager was very critical of the referees and he may well get fined. But maybe it will help the Cup in the bigger picture.

Bad officiating in the World Cup is just typical though.

http://us.soccerway.com/matches/2010/06/27/world/world-cup/argentina/mexico/881620/?ICID=PL_MS_04

There was an atrocious goal given to Argentina vs. Mexico in 2010, the goalkeeping crew were from Europe.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAzKYWiv2_E

That was a bad call and up until that point, Mexico had the better of play. European referees. So I wouldn’t isolate one region.

In South Africa I think some and maybe even one African official gypped the USA. I think FIFA withdrew one of those referees from the tournament after that match vs. Slovenia.

In 2010, USA did enough to defeat Slovenia but it ended in a draw with the disallowed goal. So we had to defeat Algeria late in game 3. That took a lot out of the USA. I think Ghana benefitted from the emotional rollercoaster that happened to us, so, I think this next time, we will avenge our two losses to them in ‘06 and ‘10.

Unless there is mickey mouse and/or crooked officiating again.

I am watching it. I also happen to have some “Roy of the Rovers” comics from over there. They are okay, from that time. Roy of the Rovers has been around for decades I gather.

I was for Netherlands more vs. Spain in the last final of the World Cup but that kick by De Jong into the Spaniard looked to be a red card to me. I think the referee was Graham Poll, England.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CexJn5kg-90

How careless of De Jong.

Same Ref, Nishimira, Red Carded Brazil vs. Netherlands in last World Cup, 2010. I vaguely remember that.

With pictures. Leave it to the Daily Mail to once again, sort through these kinds of things.

Blimey. Roy of the Rovers. Yes, the trials and tribulations of Melchester Rovers gripped the football-mad British youth since 1976 (it shut down in the mid-nineties). So engrained is it in the national psyche that even people who didn’t read it, use the term in conversation.

An unlikely, dramatic, almost Hollywood-scripted goal, will often be referred to as a ‘Roy of the Rovers moment.’

What with you reading Roy of the Rovers, and posting pictures of Martin O’Neill (not the Queen in that photo, by the way, I think it might be either Mrs Clough or Mrs Taylor) and dfwgator watching Match of the Day of the 70s, it is easy to feel very comfortable in this thread. I must say - perhaps foolishly - I half expected to find a little bit of indifference, perhaps even hostility, in a soccer thread on FreeRepublic, but with you two, and the always reliable Berlin_Freeper, I have found anything but.
