There is no monetary damage, so a lawsuit makes little sense. The Med Center has deep pockets and $25K is a pittance, so that’s what that’s about.

It is a felony to do this so the lack of mention of charges in this article is puzzling.

My wife is the ER Director for our local hospital and she’s had to deal with this problem. The first person you run into at the ER has the ability to see your records as do many others. Should anybody know you they can share that info. About 2 years ago one of the girls working the front desk had a problem with another girl who was seeing here ex boyfriend and posted some info on her to Facebook. She was terminated and prosecuted for HIPPA violations. There’s allot of people have access to your medical records that shouldn’t.

There are lots of times when there are no monetary damages that a lawsuit makes sense. If you get assaulted but don't have to go to the hospital, you can have a civil suit. If you kill a dependent loved one of somebody, you probably saved them money, but are still liable for damages.

Monetary payments are compensation for damages that cannot be undone.
