From what I’ve seen of these modern fx-oriented action films, they no longer even seem to be movies at all anymore. More like hyperkinetic, animated video-games. Indeed, when I observe them, I can’t even mentally process them like real “movies.” They just seem like a cartoonish barrage, best left ignored.

The distinction is pretty clear if you look at say, the first Star Wars trilogy versus the second one. Even though the effects are cruder in the original, the second is less satisfying because it all looks so fake.

I don’t think we’ll see much in the way of old school effects for big productions, because CGI is probably a lot cheaper than models and makeup at this point. I just hope the CGI quality improves, and the moviemakers start learning to use it more tastefully.

Yes indeed! I recall when everyone was going nuts over the Avitar movie....I watched it on DVD at my sons, one of the first movies I actually fell asleep from. That was sooo cartoonish I couldn’t hardly stand watching it!
