I think its been pretty well established the guy deserted his post after numerous emails to the family expressing his dissatisfaction with America.

That's the first time I've heard that.I *have* heard,OTOH,that he was promoted from E-3 to E-5 while in captivity.If that's correct that suggests that the Army believed him to be a soldier who was following orders when captured as well as after having been captured.But I suppose that the Army might not have been aware of these e-mails or doubted their authenticity if they were,in fact,written.

I remember when this kid disappeared. It was widely reported then that he had deserted. I didn’t even realize he was still alive. I thought the Taliban had killed him.
