My first car was a Belair, four door with the big six. It might have been rusty but I waxed and polished it just the same......
.....;
Sweet! Mine was a ‘69 Karmann Ghia, only yellow.

My first car was a ‘68 Toyota Corolla, about 15 years old.
It didn’t last long. Brakes went out on a mountain road. Had to stop and fill the radiator on certain hills. It was a piece of junk. I didn’t care much and didn’t think about or worry I was ripped off. I had better things to do. I gave it to a friend finally when it broke down. He and hs Dad towed it away and fixed it.
Back then Datsun was better than Toyota.
First car I drove regularly was a ‘73 Pontiac Grand Safari wagon. That was a great car with a huge engine and incredible turning radius.
GM cars were the best ever until the late 70’s/80’s.
Now I wouldn’t buy an American car unless it was free. Toyota now makes the best cars.
1970 Chrysler Newport. We called it the Tuna Boat.
‘63 Ford Econoline, 163 cid 6, 3 on the tree, funky faded red rattletrap. Had the engine cover between the seats so she sat 3. If you missed the garbage can, your empty [beer] can would eventually find its way to one of the rusted-through rear corners and fell out. Hey, at least bottles were verboten!
No telling what was going on in the back of the ‘butcher shop’.
1948 Dodge Pilot House B-1-B half-ton pickup, armor yellow.
It was a ‘73 Toyota Corolla with so much metal fatigue that if I went above 55 on the freeway with the windows down the roof became concave and hit whoever rode in the passenger seat on the head.
That was one worn out clunker.
Looked like this
A week after I got my license, I drove from Maryland up to New Jersey to spend a week at my uncles beach house on LBI. ; )
My sister had a yellow Pinto. The sun shattered the drivers window. Big brother that I am I said 'no problem' I'll fix it. A window from the salvage yard went in easily.....but forgot to vacuum out the shards so every time you slammed the door it would go cruchssssh.
Almost EXACTLY how I remember the day getting my license. To drive to work after school was one of the greatest feelings I had as a teenager.
Oh -- 65 Ford pickup step-side. Robin's egg blue. Four on the floor 4X4 . I should have never sold it (sniff)
It was a good car; ran it till the wheels fell off. I learned a lot about taking care of a car - my dad taught me all that, which is good to now.
Granted, with a lot of most modern new cars, you need an advanced degree from MIT.
Did the wing nut on the air filter housing work loose at highway speeds? That happened several times on my Mustang II 4 cylinder engine. It would get a little louder for a few seconds, then “zing” followed by various metallic noises. Kept spare wing nuts in the glovebox, lol. That actually was a decent little engine as far as reliability, hard to kill it as long as the oil was changed and not allowed to get low. Slow and sort of rough, though.
1967 VW Squareback i bought in 1979. I have never taken such good care of any car since.
1978 Honda Civic
A Peugeot 404. *hangs head in shame*
