I know someone that got one of those phony emotional support deals so that their dog could fly in the cabin with them in their lap. Pay a little money, get a doctor's note, and they were good to go. http://usdogregistry.org/ It sounds like this dog had stress colitis, which is very smelly and isn't going to stop soon on its own. I really think that they had no choice but to land ASAP.

Imagine the mental pictures that would give some. Would get a few thinking “what else is flying around up there with the planes and birds?”
