Annulments are dumb, you cannot pretend you were never married
It’s a Catholic thing - it says the marriage was NEVER valid. If the marriage was never consummated and could not be consummated; if it was made by people who could not marry by reasons of family relationship, knowingly or unknowingly; if it was entered into under duress or by fraud...long list.
It’s a common American corruption of the annulment process to say that the participants were too immature to make a valid marriage, even after thirty years and four children. One of the divorced Kennedy wives Sheila Rauch, wife of Joe P. refused to take her payoff and quietly co-operate - she actually won an appeal to the Vatican years after the American tribunal granted Joe P his annulment.
The process can be so corrupt, that for all I know, Ted Kennedy offered his early and serial infidelities as proof that he was too immature to have made a valid marriage to Joan and did not understand it then, but he was all grown up for Victoria. Money talks of course.
