In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
meliorism \MEEL-yuh-riz-uhm, MEE-lee-uh- \ , noun
The doctrine that the world tends to become better or may be made better by human effort.
Example sentences:
For a life worthy to be lived is one that is full of active aspiration, for something higher and better; andsuch a contemplation of the world we call meliorism .
-- Paul Carus, Monism and Meliorism , 1885
The leaders rejected the soft meliorism of more secular activists, the idea that significant progresscould be made through consciousness-raising and education campaigns, through consensus andgradual reform.
-- David Brooks, "The Ideas Behind the March," The New York Times , 2013
Etymology:
Meliorism entered English in the late 1800s. It comes from the Latin word melior meaning "better."
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Amen, brother. A for you. We’re ruining everything but more government and higher taxes can fix it.
I don’t think I know of that one.
If Obama thinks of meliorism,
It would have to be selective-
Somehow it would have to fit
With all his gloomy invective
Many cadets at West Point
Looked bored at his speech
And not at all respectful of
The stuff he tried to preach
Carter had more charisma,
And that is saying a lot
He’d served, and held a job-
Obama certainly has not...
Midget girl got up on the chair the minute I got home from an estimate, and is asleep against me, just like she is any time I’m at the computer-or sitting down reading, watching TV, or in bed asleep-where she is joined by Titus. I’ve never had a cat so insistent on touching a human-I suppose it is because she is such a little ‘fraidy cat, remembering when she was alone in the woods, and wants someone to protect her.
Our cat likes to be in the same room with us. Not on us unless it’s cold and then it’s just to absorb some body heat. A+ for you.
Titus and Yeti boy both have long, thick fur-they want to be in the same room and close-but not on, unless it is cold-Midget is a typical short-haired tabby-she likely prefers being warm more than they do...
As many as 40 members of my volunteer fire department have given up on meliorism. They are leaving the department for greener pastures after last night’s department elections. God help us. Just took a look at FB and wow. The animosity and infighting has spread to the whole community. Staggering.
If you have 40+ members, that is a pretty big squad.
That’s not really my thing, but enjoy. A+ for you.
There’s 40 on the EMS side of the house, none of them are involved. This is 40 who are strictly firefighters.
Oh, I was thinking of the guys in class being curious. Usually, it’ the ugly ones going topless, but not this time. LOL
And thank you for it. For the record, her skirt is way under-rated there....
That is a lot of people-what precipitated such a thing, if I may ask-and how did the whole community get involved in taking sides?
I do not do farcebook, because it is a lot of public squabbling-what you just described, and things that probably need to be private...
A year or so ago we had a fireman die in a fire, the state came in and fined us for workplace violations. The old school guys do not want to change, the ones leaving do. It’s a battle that has been going on for years. I actually side with the guys going. At some point, your own safety comes first when volunteering. The fight has been ongoing for over 20 years, so it’s time to give up and leave. I have little respect for any of those fighting the changes, ie the ones staying. I am still there, but I am on the EMS side of the house. It doesn’t impact me directly.
I should say “cited us” not fined us.
We just had a NYstate trooper killed in the line of duty this afternoon. Happened on 81, the same route you take through Binghamton to get to SU.
Murdered or killed in an accident? Where exactly was it?
How can employees vote to continue to violate regs/code? Who permits a force to continue to violate safety codes? Who is the governing body? I mean I realize they are volunteers but there must be oversight?
