Truthfully, I suggest they leave well before the deadline. In recent years, the Guatemalans at time have behaved in almost medieval fashion, with mobs hysterically lynching people after someone calls them a witch; and there were even incidents where American tourists were attacked because someone claimed they were there to steal babies.
There have even been regional fights in recent years between Catholics and Protestants. The place is unstable.
The two important things are that they were spontaneous, and they were deadly.
An individual, or even a small group of Jews could be set upon by a mob with little or no warning, and just as likely at noon in the marketplace as at night. The mob might go to their home and burn it down, killing anyone who flees the fire.
Fair warning. Get out now.
And before answering any of those ads to move to Belize...
Guatemala has long laid claim to much if not all of Belize. They have maps showing it as part of their country. And whenever the latest tinpot government down there gets into trouble they start agitating the masses to go and retake their “stolen lands” to the East.
I think you are right about Guatamela, and there is a tendency to bloodshed which is roused for almost any reason - there also has been a wave of sadistic/sexual killings of women.
However, about this particular group - they themselves are evidently not normal people. If they were normal, they wouldn’t suddenly be relocating to a Mayan town in Central America.
Apparently, these are members of a group called Lev Tahor. Some say it is a cult, and also some even dispute if they are really Jewish. I don’t know - I had never heard of them until now. However, I quickly found out that they had been in the US, but moved on after trouble with the law, were in Israel, but moved on after disputes with the Rabbical authorities, were in Canada, but moved after disputes with the child welfare system. Hmmmm ....
