A weird statement - is he saying, "You don't know if your child will turn out to be a murderer," or "You don't know if your child will end up being the victim of a murderer"?

I’ll give the dad some latitude. His son was murdered today. I hope I never had to deal with such a loss. I believe he meant “...being a victim...”
