Plain as it is, vanilla is the nations favorite ice-cream flavor. Our expert tasters tried 19 (including gelatos), separating the yum from the ho-hum. For ice-cream lovers who venture beyond vanilla, we also recommend a dozen in three other flavors: salted caramel, mint chip, and fudge brownie.
Taste. Among vanillas, Ben & Jerrys and Häagen-Dazs are the clear winners: dense and creamy, with intense dairy flavor and complex, high-quality vanilla flavor. A runner-up, Talenti, is quite sweet and a bit icy, with a fruity-floral vanilla flavor typical of Tahitian vanilla.
As you go down the Ratings, the ice creams tend to be a bit more gummy or have vanilla flavor thats generic or less pronounced.

Prepackaged ice cream is prepackaged ice cream. Find a small local ice cream/candy shoppe. We have one here called Dewars. Their Black and Whites are to die for and they ship their chews all over the world. I am fond of the peanut butter chews. ;)
My mother always made homemade peppermint and homemade peach every summer, the old fashioned way. It was soooo good.
You live in Bakersfield, CA?
My niece used to work at Dewars, and we often end up there when we are visiting family, or passing through.
I haven’t had the Black and White, but I agree that the peanut butter chews are very good.
We used to eat butter pecan and black walnut—both so good.
Between Blue Bell and Shiner Bock, we Texans are pretty spoiled.
My other favorite summer flavor, peach! Yumm!
Howard Johnson’s coffee ice cream—the best.
You can peel a good peach and mix it with Bluebell Homemade vanilla and a drop of almond extract. Taste just like my mother’s homemade.
They even sell a flavor where they mix peaches with Homemade Vanilla. Strawberries too, in addition to normal strawberry flavored ice cream. I’ll have to try adding the almond extract.

Going to see my mom’s family in the mountains of Pa. in the summertime. What memories!
Fresh huckleberry and blackberry pies.
Picking tea berries, hearing the whippoorwill and bobwhite and spotting deer at dusk.
I want to cry.
I have had the strawberry, it’s good, but not the peach. It has to be fresh peaches. Just a drop of the almond extract!
As others have mentioned, Blue Belle is really quite good. I also like Turkey Hill quite a bit. For something a little different, I like Kroger supermarket’s “upscale store brand”, Private Selection. They sell some pretty interesting mixes, like Sweet Cream with Cannoli, and Chocolate Eclair flavors.
I don’t do Ben and Jerry on general principles.
Oh, and since we’re having a thread about ice cream, I gotta ask: is there anyone out there who eats rum raisin flavor ice cream?
I ask because I tried in one time (Haagen-Daaz), and threw the pint away after about three bites. I just don’t get the appeal of that one at all!
Gelato has less cream. It is made with mostly milk. The higher fat in ice cream covers your taste buds, while the lower fat content in gelato makes the flavor seem more intense. More air is churned into ice cream which makes it less dense than gelato.
I love Blue Bunny ice cream!!! Holiday time they have peppermint
ice-cream used to only be able to get on east coast but now available
in Walmarts!!!
I also NEVER purchase Ben & Jerry’s CANNOT support their liberalism!!!!
I also think they have way to much stuff in the ice cream and not enough
ice cream!!!!
My favorite too
No doubt, the best of the best is Blue Belle straight from the great country of Texas. It is most flavorful is left to “breathe” for a few minutes before consumption.
Dammit, 12:19 AM and I am out of Blue Belle.
I make two trips a week to Braums. Best milk ever. And they have Grape Sherbet.
