We stopped answering unknown phone calls a long long time ago. But I was outside and the wife, expecting a call, did answer the call. Trying to make a long story short.....
It was from a family member whom we care enough about that we would do almost anything for. The wife was convinced it was from this family member and when she told me she convinced me too. A few phone calls later involving public attorneys and lawyers we were told to send a very large sum of CASH using UPS.
And then,,,, FINALLY,,, I realized this was a scam. But the knowledge about the details of our particular family structure (a bit different) scares the hell out of us. We called the sheriffs office and gave them the details of the phone numbers used in the scam. The main one of which came from Montreal, Quebec. I did the reverse search after realizing.

Thanks for the info. Just one other bit of advice, a year ago, I got an odd call from a number i did not recognize. I used a search engine to look it up. One of the top items listed included a headline detailing something about a scam. I clicked on the link and got hit by a virus. Apparently, this is one way to draw people to sites, and infect their computers.

I love to make these guys riled up until they start cursing me (real curses! not just swear words) I even started mumbling some curses of my own to one guy and he screamed and hung up
Can we get the Democrat voter rolls and start marketing scams to them??
I always tell people I have no friends because friends are people who:
1. Call at three in the morning to borrow money
2. Call at three in the morning to ask you to get them out of jail
3. Tell you sad stories about their daughter getting pregnant.
Well the first two require money which I don’t have and what I am supposed to say about the third-”It wasn’t me”.
That’s a good idea. My son and I have Facebook pages. It’s how we keep up with each other now that he is in the Marines.
This is an old ruse. The calls from Canada are typical. The ones that tried it on me claimed to be in Vancouver, so they do get around. Cops knew about it. Cuidado’
True story.
Once I got a scam call. They left me a voice mail. I waited until they called again and I recognized the number.
I answered the phone in a loud authoritative voice:
“Blair County Sheriffs office, Fraud Division, who is this?! This number has been linked to illegal telecommunication activity. Do not hang up or you will be impeding a law enforcement investigation and committing the crime of Obstruction of Justice! Who and where are you?!”
I kept them on the line for a good thirty seconds while they stammered and mumbled. Then they hung up. Never heard from them again. It was fun.
Same thing happened to my elderly mom. She’s still very sharp. What tipped her off is they’grandchild’ didn’t call her by her nickname. She led the caller on. Then reported it to the BBB and the FBI.

Had lunch with one of our JP’s in Brazoria County, Texas. When I got home noticed I had an email from him saying he was in Italy, had wallet stolen, etc. Gave him a hard time about it because he had no money and I loaned him money for lunch today. Told him I’d already contributed so no more money for them. Until I called his office they were not even aware that their email had been hacked. Addresses of lots of important folks in that email list!
Have also noticed a huge uptick in robo calls both to the office and cell phone from the same calling number. Interesting because office number is 281 and cell is 713. Not sure what the AG in Texas can do about it but would like to think that there is something we can do on a state level about the bogus DNC list.

I’ve got some real simple rules.
I never ever buy, borrow, lend, or sell to family, friends or neighbors.
I got e mail (allegedly) from a friend, saying virtually word for word what you just said. I called his home phone. He was in Texas, and said his e mail had been hacked. He changed his password immediately.
