The Dartman and the neighbor take down a big o' male coyote at over a mile.
We believe the 300 made the hit. This is our shot data.
The 300 win mag - 2768 fps with 208 amax = 3.490 second time of flight.
The 338 papua- 2778 fps with 300 berger = 3.019 second time of flight.
The 338 should have hit about 0.4 seconds before the 300 and making us conclude the 300 made the kill.
more info- 300 win bullet drop @1860 yards=84.5moa or 1645 inches=137 feet of bullet drop. Energy at target-484 fp.
338 lapua @1860yards=65 moa or 1266 inches=105 feet of bullet drop. Energy at target-1012 fp.
137 feet of bullet drop is like shooting a mortar.
What a shot! I’d be more impressed if it were a congresscritter. ;)
"That's because long shots generally go places you wouldn't wanna have to go afterwords to have to confirm 'em. Confirmation's a desk pogue's problem. You know what it takes to make a shot at that range? Everything comes into play that far. Humidity elevation, temp, winds, spin-drift. There's a 6-10 second flight time so you have to shoot it where the targets going to be. Even the coriolis effect, the spin of the earth comes into play."
-Bob Lee Swagger
Regardless of the distance, I'm impressed that a coyote can fire a gun that accurately.
I am in constant amazement at what it takes to make these shots. My longest big game shot was probably less than 300 yards and most generally less than 150. I do enjoy varmints (very little targets) out to several hundred yards.
In fact the shot could have just as easily been made with a single shot rifle. :)
interesting

Longest coyote kill shot...1860 yards!!

That should qualify for post of the day!!!
My longest was an antelope at 970 yards. The wind is the most important factor, the rest of it is just math, a very good rifle, good optics, and practice.
At a 1000 yds a 2 mph cross wind can move a bullet a foot, and it gets a lot worse the further you go, and how do you knw what the wind is doing between you and the target. You just need the wind gods on your side.
We're hard pressed to even find a range that offers anything over 100 yards.
That's pretty darn good too. Care to share some details: rifle, caliber, load etc.?
Was it a one shot kill?
has anyone seen my dog?
.338 Papua. It’s like having a whole country dropped on your azz.
Pikers! Elmer Keith said he shot a deer at 600 yards with a .44 Magnum S&W. Open sights!
He has been called a liar ever since, even though tests showed it could be done.
as for me? I can’t even see 600 yards!
Ever see the guys who shoot at maximum ranges with old milsurp rifles? Hits on an 18” round steel plate at 1200+ yards with iron sights are not unusual.
I love that book (Point of Impact). The next 2 sequels are pretty good too. After that.....meh.
