To shut down a water main you need a Gate Key, It’s about 6 ft in length and has a square that is made to fit the Gate Valve! A wet well has hollow bolts that secure it to a flange on piping that is encased in concrete, so if you hit it with your car it snaps off like you see in the movies. If you hit a dry well it will prob just lean a bit and your car is screwed! Dry wells are encased in concrete
at the ditch line to prevent blow off @ 200 plus lbs per sq inch!

Dry wells shut off below freeze zone after use and then drain into gravel. A plunger on a brass rod which can be up to 4’ in length from the top nut where you turn it on opens the hydrant and then closes when done. And then it drains!
