In today's feature, novelist Edna Ferber does for Alaska what she did for Texas in "Giant" and for Oklahoma in "Cimarron". This epic miniminiseries type story covers Alaska from the end of World War I to its statehood in 1959. Richard Burton stars as an ambitious cannery czar. Martha Hyer(looking particularly beautiful here) and Carolyn Jones play the two women who love him while Robert Ryan plays his friend turned arch-nemesis/rival.

If people think they hear too much about the Kardashians today, they should have been around 40 years ago. Back then not a week would go by without hearing what Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were or were not doing, were or were not wearing, eating, drinking, driving, fighting about or cheating with.

The closest we have to Burton in today’s actors may be George Clooney offstage and Jon Hamm onstage via Mad Men, Russell Crowe and Christian Bale come close. I don’t keep up with most today’s movies, but I can not think of any woman of today who compares in totality with Elizabeth Taylor, as she was both on and offstage.
