Greetings from Missouri. We are at 55 degrees here at the one acre ranch. The past two weeks have been record setters. First we had temps about 30 degrees above normal, and now we have had temps about 30 to 40 degrees below normal.

This AM we had frost on the roof tops, had to cover tomatoes last night, and bring in a bunch of my seedlings. This is unprecidented in my memory. I have never before experienced frost after Mother's Day, but it does demonstrate why I figure on June 1 as the "real planting date".

Thanks to Rightly for posting the thread last weekend. The drive to Kirksville was great - such pretty country and farmland. We got to see our daughter for the first time since she moved to Kansas. So proud to see our Granddaughter graduate from Truman State. She worked so hard and got full scholarships so that she doesn't have any college debt, and has a job starting in two weeks.

I was asked for a pickle recipe, and I'll post that after the ping on this thread. Hope that all of you are doing well, and your gardens are lush and productive. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

I just got back from an afternoon on my land. My folks and I spent a day out there last weekend, too, right before heading out for a few days. I had help planting my first round of corn, but I have to admit, I like the solitude better.

I had to stop and get more landscape fabric, and of course that meant seeing Diana again! Jungs was a zoo, everybody was so busy that the store manager started giving me orders before realizing I don't work there. (I get that a lot, I swear there's a “helpful person” vibe that people are picking up on. Wish I could make it stop.)

I found Ghost Peppers! Someone was saying they were hard to come by, so I grabbed a pack and will be growing them out for seed this year. I'm hoping they'll also help with pest control. At the very least, I'm sure they're good against fingerblight.

Somebody at Jungs messed up, though! When I went to check out, the 3x100 rolls of landscape fabric rang up as 3x24. It seems somebody stuck the wrong tags on them! Poor Diana looked at the line behind me and said I should come back another day to straighten it out. Every register had a line 10 people deep. It was like Black Friday, only more polite. (She then had to explain to the person behind me that we were friends outside of work, she wasn't just letting some stranger get away with that.)

I really need to get my hunting license renewed this year. The deer tracks in my garden are HUGE!!!!! Any bigger and I'd have sworn they were cows. Last weekend we passed a herd of them, and dad commented that he'd never seen deer that big. If I get one we might need a bigger freezer. Back on the home front, I think 2 of my tomatoes finally sprouted. Still waiting on the others. This cold weather has slowed things down some, one of my aunts in the next town over had frost this morning! Made me glad I still have my wall-o-waters up. I should check on the chickpea, though. One of them had sprouted, and I don't think they're frost-hardy.

You have seen those advertisements for Miracle Grow potting soil well they’re true. My son and I bought some tomato plants at home depot. Some were planted in Miracle Grow and some were planted in Scott’s, John Deere, and grocery store potting soil. The Miracle Grow plants were enormous, lush. and green. The ones planted in the cheaper soil looked pathetic. Went out this morning and bought more Miracle grow and plan to transplant.

Picking aspargus here in west Michigan. Have no plants in the ground yet but should be able to plant this week finally!! Last night was I think our last cold night - 35. We have been busy building a new woodshed in the meantime and cutting up next years wood. Next Saturday - splitting time. Will be putting in some plants this week, and a few flowers, mostly peppers and broccoli.
