a Redford Township police officer is being accused of killing a 10-month-old lab/pit bull mix. The officer was chasing a suspect through a backyard when the officer claims the young puppy charged at him. He claimed he fired two shots because he feared for his life. When the dog's owner came out to demand answers police arrested him and charged with interfering with a police investigation.

“I never hear tales of letter carriers shooting dogs.”

That’s probably because they carry pepper-spray.

Yes it is. 10 month olds are still quite immature emotionally.

A lab mix? Hearts of gold and heads of stone.

Odd that the dog didn’t attack the suspect. Or maybe only the cop entered the citizen’s property where the dog was.

Damn, the dog was in its own yard.

Great quote and perspective.

“10 months is a “puppy” Really?”

Yes & no. Large breeds are typically not mature until they reach age 2. That said a 10 month old Lab, or a Pit Bull of the same age, is a pretty big animal, easily mistaken for an adult.

I don’t really know what a homeowner is expected to do these days. You put up a fence to keep your dog safe, and your neighbors safe from your dog. Somebody trespasses in your yard, the dog bites them and you are at fault?

That somebody is a police officer on official business has a right to be there, for sure. But if he gets bit? Well, that’s taking one for the team as far as I’m concerned. Occupational hazard.

It probably was like a hockey fight: the dog didn’t have time to react to the first person over the fence — but nailed the second (or nearly so).

I think some of these bastards are Benghazi Barry Brownshirts—drunk with “power”, and trying desperately to make ordinary citizens SNAP.

Totally agree. Being a cop has risks just like being a deep see fisherman or oil roughneck and if they don't like that they can quit. The way I see it a citizen's rights, including property rights, are more important than a cop's safety.

What’s the problem, couldn’t pass the mailman test so you became a cop? If he shot one of my family members ( Cause that’s what they are) you better not be on my property cause I would have claimed trespassing and put a round in his ass.

And, of course, you were afraid for your life - you know how cops are...

The most important takeaway from this story us that the cop was able to go home at the end of the day and plat fetch with his own dog.

Or shot her, too.

What part of the reality that you only “own” anything (including your dog), at the pleasure and whim of any government here is unclear. And, in many cases, don’t forget to pay your rent.

IF there is one single hair of difference between this (except possibly that it worse, in that rent is involved)and 1950’s era USSR life, I’d like to have this explained to me.

“We all know what would happen to me. That same exact cop would cuff me, and arrest me. Then a DA would charge me with a felony.”

You’re dreaming. You would be hauled off in a body bag - you would not be charged. Your gun would be confiscated, though, “as evidence”.

“I expect in another generation’s time the “cop shoots and kills dog because it came running up with tail wagging” stories will be replaced with “cop shoots and kills homeowner because she answered the door with a frown” stories.”

Well, except THOSE won’t be printed or available for reading on the Internet.
