They are "very concerned" about ice melting in western Antarctica. Below is a map of Antarctic volcanoes. Notice anything about it?Hate to seem like a smartass, but are you aware that not one person in 10,000 can tell you when viewing your map, which way is "north." or why?
At the South pole, every direction viewed is "north..."

My guess is “western Antarctica” is the part of Antarctica in the western hemisphere, and I can only assume that the given map is aligned with the western hemisphere on the west side, but unless you know the continental features that lie on the western side (I think the large peninsula does) you would need cartographic lines and labels to know for sure.

West Antarctica is the part of Antarctica which is in the western hemisphere, i.e. the half of the world where the Americas are.
