EDITORS NOTE: This article is about a virulently racist song. Read no further if you wish to avoid racist imagery and slurs.
Ni**er Love A Watermelon Ha! Ha! Ha! merits the distinction of the most racist song title in America. Released in March 1916 by Columbia Records, it was written by actor Harry C. Browne and played on the familiar depiction of black people as mindless beasts of burden greedily devouring slices of watermelon.
I came across this gem while researching racial stereotypes. I was a bit conflicted on whether the song warranted a listen. Admittedly, though, beneath my righteous indignation, I was rather curious about how century-old, overt racism sounded and slightly amused by the farcical title. When I started the song, the music that tumbled from the speakers was that of the ever-recognizable jingle of the . (For the record, not all ice cream trucks play this same song, but a great many of them do.)

A very long time ago, someone wrote some racist lyrics to a tune which had been around for an even longer time.
Now, according to NPR (and their race-baiting minions) anyone who uses the ORIGINAL tune for any purpose is a racist.
If the race-baiters have to go to these lengths to ‘find’ racism for our society, then only one conclusion can be drawn. there IS no racism in this country any more.

While I don’t know what “older people” Stossel asked, I can certainly remember “Eenie Meenie Minee Mo” from the 1950s which was before it was changed to use the word “tiger”. (I have no idea when the word was changed.)

Ice cream trucks here are all run by immigrants and they fly by so fast I doubt they actually sell ice cream. Then they have no idea what music they`re playing. It`s not unusual to hear Jingle Bells or other Christmas music in 100degree July and August. Racism??? Ok..I`m not paying Middle Eastern types for overpriced ice cream.

Wait till they discover the original lyrics of what was to become “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Dunno if they’d hate or love “To Anacreon In Heaven.”

We sang a song in Girl Scouts when I was a kid. “Do you ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro.....”.

Wow! I've lived in this country for almost seven decades and I never knew that "Turkey in the Straw" was racist.
I did learn one thing from the article, Harry Reid thinks that Barack 0bama is "Zip Coon".

The tune is Turkey in the Straw. Is that offensive to Turks?
Quickie research has Turkey in the Straw going back to 1860. But the tune goes back to Andrew Jackson, as "Ole Zip Coon".

To the tune of "Turkey in the Straw":
Racism here
Racism there
Racism almost everywhere
But there's one thing that's true, both near and far
There's nobody more racist than N P R.

The ice cream truck in our town has a pretty sketchy windowless van vibe to it. Even across the front it says “caution....children”
