Garden state parkway 1993, watched a car fire get going real good.
The gas shocks that held the hood open went off, hood slammed shut, and the firemen had to pry it back open.
Then they got rewarded with bright white sparks from something other than battery in the engine compartment.

Ever see a car fire with magnesium....?

looks like 4th July om steroids....

Especially when hit it with water

VWs are loaded with

The bright white sparks are from burning magnesium. Some air-cooled VW blocks were magnesium but I saw several mag fires on a mutual aid fire at a Chrysler dealer service department. The mount that held the steering column to the dash was magnesium.

You can squirt all the water in the world on it and it just keeps burning until it decides it is done.

There are special fire extinguishers called “class D” made for it, but it is so rare, no-one carries them unless they have a special need to.
