Why should we accept the hell of other people’s kids?
Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | 08 May 2014 | Amanda Craig

Is there anyone on the planet who wouldn’t pay to avoid travelling with other people’s children? A survey has found that almost 70 per cent of travellers think planes should have child-free zones. Half of those would pay up to £63 extra to fly without children, especially on long-haul flights. I can see what they mean. Flying back from Italy recently, I had my back so thoroughly bruised by a small, restless boy that if King Herod were standing in the European elections, I’d almost be tempted. Under normal circumstances, I like children – an eccentricity which has led to my work as a children’s book reviewer. And naturally, I am devoted to my own. But other people’s children are, by and large, hell. The noise, tedium and energy of a child is something we accept only when in the grip of parental passion, professional vocation or martyrdom. Yet such is the modern mania for tolerating kids that we are afraid to utter a word of complaint, even when they come up and kick you in the shins for their own entertainment. Why do we accept it?

Well, we imagine different things, I’m afraid. I imagine the brat getting devoured by the pit pull.

Not all pit bulls are nasty, by the way.

It could have been a teacup poodle and I'd have been just as concerned.

Dogs are not human beings. Dogs are incapable of realizing that a child who just pulled their tail or slapped their nose is not a threat.

Thinking little fluffy is incapable of an instinct attack is ignorant.

And it’s only going to get worse now that they’ll allow people to chatter on their cell phones all through the flight.

irresponsible parents.

parents who indulge any whim of a child because they were never taught right from wrong. Parents who are nothing more that spoiled pothead drags on society.

An infant can be forgiven up to a point when you have a new mother who does not know what to do. However when she does not want any HELPFUL (not to be confused with busy body know it alls) advise about traveling with a baby she loses any protection of immunity.

(next time: airplanes as a miracle cure. Passengers who board first needing medical “extra time” but upon landing, they have amazingly healed themselves of all ills.)

I wonder how old the 2 of you are.

I have a special-needs daughter. We try NOT to have to travel with her in anything but a private conveyance (family car), but sometimes we have to. Yes...I have been THAT parent that took a child that cried almost the entire flight (Houston-Seattle), but there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it...and Benadryl doesn’t work on her.

I understand that there are some people that simply don’t like kids. I would hope, however, that some shred of compassion, no matter how small, exists in everyone, and would govern their actions accordingly.

These days, you have so many kids in restaurants that most of them have multiple high-chairs - MULTIPLE high chairs!

Oh, the horror.

To be honest, it really is disconcerting to go to a restaurant where you are paying good money only to be seated next to a table with a screaming out-of-control child.

I feel like you're blaming the gun for the shooting here. The parents are the culprit here. The kid will do whatever he can get away with, that's natural, we all did it. I don't blame kids for acting like kids, I blame parents for not reigning their kids in (possible special needs situations aside).

Children bring out the worst in people. Satan’s minions and self-absorbed kiddie-lovers. Fie on us all!

“It’s only been relatively recently that children were brought to “adult” places like restaurants, shows, and the like.”

Needs to be refined a bit. 50 years ago the old Supper Clubs were off limits to kids by tradition.

There were plenty of kid friendly restaurants otherwise and I’m not talking about Upchucky-Cheese type places.

From the airline’s point of view, it depends on which group of people provides more revenue, and which group is more likely to change their “flight-buying” behavior, and in what way.

We were on a flight to Cancun once when a man woman and kid about 7 sat in front of us. As soon as the seat belt sign went off they released the kid who began to run back and forth down the aisle. After about the 10th time I stopped him and said.........if you run by me one more time you may accidentally trip. He sat down for the rest of the flight. After he sat down I said loud enough for the parents to hear.......you know I go on vacation to get away from kids. Why do I have to put up with other peoples unruly children? Lol

..if you run by me one more time you may accidentally trip.

If that was me would have showed the kid a handkerchief soaked in chloroform and said "how would you like to take a long nap?"
