Raw video: Man arrested at Gilford school board meeting
Published on May 5, 2014 William Baer, a parent upset over a reading selection in Gilford, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct when police said he did not leave a school board meeting after being asked

Perhaps you missed my point. His crime was being disruptive to the meeting which is technically “disturbing the peace”. However, it would have been better handled by the Chair by asking the officer to trespass (remove) the individual. That would have likely resulted in just a citation.
So you are asserting that because one person breaks the law, that now everyone can break the law. I do not agree with that line of thinking. I believe the laws should be enforced.
Technical ... perhaps, but that is the current state of the law.
Making false accusations about people you have know knowledge of is a tactic used by the left and is unbecoming of a Freeper. I have not now, or ever consumed any form of pot. Please keep your false accusations to yourself.
I am of the opinion that at a minimum, a lawsuit is in order and perhaps pornography charges could be brought against the teachers that distributed the material.
Laws ( or just rules as in this case) which violate the constitution are not to be obeyed. This father was absolutely right to defend his daughter and by extension, everyone else’s child. This incident demonstrates just how far our country has fallen away from our constitution.
So, what’s your story? Fall out of the left side of your bed this morning?
This incident was more like Nazi Germany or Mao’s China than the USA.
The correct method to address this would be for the father to address the school board, properly and in accordance with the rules. If that did not achieve his goals, then file a lawsuit against the school board. And if that did not work, swear out a complaint / arrest warrant against the teacher and/or school board that supplied the pornographic materials.
The correct order for affecting change in a democratic republic is (metaphorically):
soap box
ballot box
jury box
ammo box
The jury box cover civil disobedience which is what this father did by refusing to follow the rules of the meeting. Perhaps that was his intent and perhaps he wanted to be arrested. Too many times people escalate to the the biggest stick that they have. Just like the Chair and the police officer in this case escalated to “disturbing the peace”. The officer could have simply told the man to leave and if he did not, cite him for trespass. However, because both sides wanted a confrontation, the situation quickly escalated and in my opinion, unnecessarily.
Somehow I can’t envision you as a participant in the original Tea Party.
I imagine that the poor Jews made pretty well the same arguments about following the rules in the 1930s.
You seem to imply that this guy deserved to be arrested, simply because another of the parents decided to engage him in a debate. There were a number of far better options open to them from allowing him to finish his argument to simply moving on. Instead, in true fascist manner, he was taken away and handcuffed and charged with an offense.
This guy is a hero for standing up for his daughter and for all of our children.
You, however, think that it’s perfectly alright that he was arrested. You have kids?
Actually I agree with him being arrested, although the charge should be enrolling his kid in a public school.
Perhaps you are correct.
I would postulate that many of our founding fathers did not view the original Tea Party in a favorable light as witnessed by Benjamin Franklin stating that the destroyed tea must be paid for, all 90,000 pounds.
In the list of causes of the tea party, one can certainly ascribe a good portion of the conflict to Governor Thomas Hutchinson who would not allow the ships to leave Boston harbor without paying the duty. Again, we see someone escalating when calmer heads could have resolved the situation. Other Royal governors did allow the ships in their ports to leave without paying the duty.
Some folks just don’t think that havind a lardass cop hovering over a school board meeting at the beck and call of the local statist bureaucrat has a chilling effect on speech. Go figure.
He was allotted his two minutes as stipulated by the Chair. When he exceeded his time and continued to talk, he was asked to respect the rules as well as others in the room. When he did not do so, it is then proper that he should have been removed in order to allow the meeting to continue so that others might speak as well.
While I commend the officer for initially asking the man to leave, resorting to a charge of and arrest for disturbing the peace was an unnecessary escalation. A simple citation for trespass should have been the next level in the use of force continuum.
And although not really germane to this conversation, yes I have three children.
People like you have no fear/understanding of the implications of incidents like this where the raw power of government is flexed with such impunity.
Why are you on the Free Republic at all? You have no idea what Conservatives stand for. Hint: we stand for individual freedom and against all-encompassing government.
There’s another troubling aspect to this that I haven’t seen addressed. The “parent” who was speaking at the start of the video, was arguing in favor of the pornographic book, and accusing “these people” of trying to ban the book and dictate what his kids can and cannot read.
As unimaginable as it may be to decent folks, there actually are people out there who want their children to be abused like this. And some of those people get on the Internet to promote their sick ideas. They aren’t always upfront about what they’re promoting. Usually they will attack those who are trying to protect innocent children, and cloak their agenda in accusations of book banning, civil disobedience, etc. Rational people try to reason with them, as if the disrupters just don’t understand the situation. They understand it, because they created it. For whatever reason, they want the children to be destroyed by pornography and the teaching of deviant sex acts. They can’t be reasoned out of that mindset, because reasoning was never an aspect of them adopting that mindset in the first place.
And my point is, the father should have waited his turn, said his peace and then if the board did not address his issue, continued his protest through other means available to him.
Spouting of, bullying others, not following the rules and in general behaving like they are the most important person in the room is childish and is something that the left does when they don’t get their way. While I understand he is passionate about what he believes in, acting like a child and showing everyone that he can behave like a horses rear end does not advance his cause. Further, it damages his cause by allowing the opposition to disregard his comments all that much easier.
As for knowing what conservatives stand for, well perhaps you are correct. I used to think that conservatives were the somber ones that did not let their passions govern their thoughts. That conservatives weighed the facts and did not let their emotions control them.
You’re way off: conservatives aren’t passive, pedantic, rule following, lukewarm sheep. We actively and forcefully defend our families, our communities, and our nation. I wouldn’t give a teaspoon of warm spit for a “conservative” who sits back and allows his children to have their minds polluted by an activist school board.
Yes, we should be dumping tea. People who think like you do should just stand clear and hope the Brits will leave you alone.
When it came to my children's education, I got fed up with the public school system when my oldest went to the 3rd grade. At that point I pulled them out and set them to private school and later then to charter schools.
People like me have fought for and bled for this nation. We love this nation because we have seen how other nations are failing or have failed their people. We also know that there is no place else to go and this nation is still our best hope. That is why we work within the laws of this nation, because we still see a lot of good in this nation. Therefor I am still at the ballot box level. As a precinct captain, I actively work to get more conservative registered and to the polling stations so that we have a favorable outcome. I have also supported and worked for the three recall elections here in Colorado to remove state legislators who have passed odious gun laws. Again, all of this is within the laws for how my state governs elections.
You may not appreciate the work that myself and thousands of others like me perform. You may even think that we are wasting our time. But at least in my state, we are making changes and taking the political world back.
OK, NOW I have to apologize: you really are an activist of the best stripe, masquerading as a simple law-following milquetoast. I applaud your efforts to get voters, recall gun-grabbers, and protect your children.
You have instantly gone from “target” to “person I add to the list of people I admire”. Drat.
I agree that the school council meeting was tightly structured to prevent dissent and you and I would have probably stayed within the guidelines. The part where I parted company was the idea of an arrest - with the government’s inevitable permanent record and potential limitations on the Right To Bear Arms - made on him. The whole procedure smacks of intolerable fascism and governmental overreach, hence my anger.
Nonetheless, you’re one of the good ones.
