A few years later, I remember us all lined up in the hall of the school..waiting for our dose of the vaccine.
I was part of the Salk vaccine trials back in 1954.
They announced who received what shot (vaccine/placebo) over the radio and I remember sitting there all excited ...
... and how disappointed my mom was when we found out I had been given the placebo.
I was even more disappointed - I had to get another shot.

I was teaching 1st grade in Boston in the 1954-55 school year and the entire class got the Salk vaccine.
It was also the school year that “under God” was introduced in the pledge.
An unusual school year.
