Yeah I just don’t get the attraction for giving money away.
It is deemed cheating when the house can lose
What would he do if he got a pair of 8’s or Ace’s?
It’s not illegal to count cards-you’re on private property though so they can make “house rules”
I think that in this country casinos are allowed to bar just about anyone they wish simply for winning. It,it would seem, isn't a violation of state or Federal law to "count cards" so you don't get arrested. But they can ban you.And I'll bet that if you violate such a ban you can,at the very least,be arrested for trespassing...if not something more serious. But I'm not sure of that.
Stop at Tommy Knockers on the way home?
I was in a meeting at the olde tyme Jessie Beck’s Riverside Inn in Reno. The meeting broke up for a half-hour, so I went down to the coffee shop for some iced tea or something. As I was returning to the meeting rooms, I saw a mom, dad, and son standing by one of the big bertha slot machines. The dad was dressed as a typical American tourist, mismatched shirt and shorts, an ole rain hat, red socks and sneakers. He was explaining to his son what it was while the mom waited patiently. The dad pulled out a silver dollar, put it the machine, pulled the lever, and walked away. But before they had gone far, the machine finished it’s twittering and blinking, paused, and dropped many silver dollars into the tray. But that wasn’t all. The change girl came over, called security. Security checked the machine, and the changed girl paid the man $5000 and told him he could pick up the rest of his loot at the money change. That one silver dollar paid the family a $65,000 jackpot.
If they’d only waited a few minutes, they’d have found he couldn’t count much past four.
My dad served in the army during WWII in the South Pacific and spent a lot of time island hopping on naval ships in between landings and battles. On one very long voyage, he befriended a sailor who grew up in Nevada and had just before he got drafted, was a dealer at one of those early casinos out there.
My dad along with many other army guys and sailors used to often pass the time on long sea voyages by playing card games- there often wasnt much else to do. My dad wasnt much it to gambling per se, he was no fool with his money, but he was very good at math and statistics, a real natural at it he was a carpenter by trade before and after the war and could calculate sq. footage and figure framing and roof angles all in his head without paper or pencil. Heck my dad would take my mother grocery shopping and at the checkout, have the total bill calculated in his head within a penny or two. His new friend saw how good he was at math and according to my dad, one day he taught him the secrete of counting cards.
All I remember was my dad playing penny and quarter and $5 limit poker with his friends for fun when I was a kid and my dad always cleaned up. My dad would always also win at any card games like pinochle and hearts, just about any card game. In fact I never saw my dad play cards or even games of Monopoly or Chess when he didnt win. My dad could and would anticipate your next move or the next card you would play long well before you even thought of it.
My dad told my brother and I that he had been taught how to count cards by this navy friend under the condition that he would never divulge to others what he had been taught and my dad would never tell us how it was done. My older brother once begged my dad to go to Vegas or Atlantic City with him, just once and even offered to bank roll him, but my dad had no interest in doing so. I dont think it was because he considered being able to count cards as cheating or as being wrong, but rather that the house was much better at cheating overall and that big stakes gambling was a losers game in the long run
Our daughter spent some of her formative years in Elko, NV. You couldn’t get her near a casino these days. My teaching may have contributed but her peer group at that time were knowledgeable about the realities of gambling and impressed on her better than I could the stupidity of gambling.
Awwwww that’s precious. Good story. Thanks for sharing it.
He was using an abacus. dead giveaway.
“gambling is stupid”
And your right! That’s why good players keep their gambling to a minimum. I hate to gamble that’s why I play poker.
