Actually, Gore's interference with the original mission objectives doomed the project by delaying it.
That's not to mention that hyper clean storage costs for the bird were about $1M/month, sitting at Goddard.
Then again, that's nothing compared to what Gore has in mind for taxpayers and consumers...

Why the image be dark on the night side? The earth is lit up like a Christmas tree with city lights, a good high ISO camera would produce amazing shots at night.
