Do you believe in fairy tales? I dont simply because Ive already outgrown my childhood fascination for magic wands, fairy godmothers and frogs and beasts that turned into handsome princes. And lets not even talk about damsels in distress who had to wait for their superficial saviors to hand them their own pre-conceived notion of happiness. But I do believe in the power of luck and hardwork and that if you have what it takes to weather the storms and climb the heavens to chase your stars, more than likely, you'll be able to catch more than what you have wished for. Five years ago, Arnel Pineda stumbled upon his stars, handed in a silver platter by no less than his modern fairy godmother in the person of the legendary founder and guitarist of the iconic rock band Journey. Neil Schon discovered Arnel on You Tube while trolling the web in search of the new voice of Journey, a band that had already gone through many vocalists including Steve Perry, the bands third and most charismatic frontman.

After his mother became ill, he spent less and less time on the road. When she died, he quit music all-together for several years, even giving up on his second solo project. I don't think there was a falling-out, just a going-of-separate-ways.
I’m a huge “old genesis” fan, but I really appreciate all of their work right up to (and not including) Calling All Stations.
I’ve also got every concert DVD released by Genesis and Gabriel, and even some that I don’t think was ever actually released.
They want three bucks to watch it.
Yes Perry was an employee of the band NOT a member!
Yes, I heard about this movie. Unfortunately, it’s not on Netflix. Maybe I can find it pay per view or buy it.
Maybe it gave Schon the idea. I think it was a true story, no?
indeed--and in my opinion, his voice is at number 1...
Yah that was a great documentary and would have been almost unbelievable if it didn’t’ happen.
I watched journey live in Manila just yesterday on AXs tv
This new singer is head and shoulders above Steve perry in the talent department
It’s one of the few movies I own that I’ve seen at least 20 times. You have to fast forward through a rather provocative section, but the rest of it is a really great story. Seriously.
The fact that I’ve been in a fair number of rock and country bands (I’m in three now) enhances my enjoyment of the movie.
A Trick of the Tail is actually my favorite.....I don’t think Gabriel could have topped “The Lamb” so he went out, I think at the best possible time.
Its not Journey without Steve Perry
Agreed
The doc pretty much says that. Also, there’s still alot of love and admiration still there between the members of the band for Perry. The doc definitely is a tribute to Perry. Pineda certainly idolizes him.
I saw an online poll somewhere asking if Journey show take Perry back if he want so sing with them again, or stay with Pineda. Over 80% polled say bring Perry back.
I don’t think they can do that even if they want too, unless it’s a celebration one time performance or maybe even tandem with Pineda.
The band has a whole new following that is International. There would be a huge falling out if they did that. Plus they have a different sound now. I think Schon guitar work has always been understated. The guy can be heavy metal, mellow rock, whatever he wants.
But even in this posting there are die hared Perry fans that wouldn’t give the new kid a chance.
I also think that singing in a group like Journey could be extremely traumatizing to a guy’s voice. Perry would sing, like a young Sinatra. Pineda on the other hand screams.
There’s a youtube video that compared them, and they clearly are different. Perry more pure, cleaner. A real artist. Pineda is just raw but seasoned.
Will be interesting to see where the band is three years from now. Pineda is no fluke if he’s been with them for over 6 years.
I agree. They really were an amazing band. Watching the latest concert kinda makes me sad for them. They really seem to be phoning it in.
Ever heard the stories about the tour when Van Halen opened for Journey? Very funny. The one about Steve Perry’s scarf is hysterical.
Alot of bands have jumped the shark. You see them playing in places like Oldie reunions thru out the country or in out door arenas like in places like Peachtree City, GA.
Journey has not jumped the shark.
No, tell us.
Listening now an he’s GREAT! Thanks for posting this story!
Is Arnel Pineda still considered a “new” lead singer? He’s been with the band since 2007 and even made two hit records with them — Revelation in 2008 and Eclipse in 2011.
I’d say this for Pineda, he’s a worthy successor to Steve Perry and a more energetic performer IMHO.
RE: Its not Journey without Steve Perry.
Is it still the Three Stooges without Curly?
