Old time radio guys are usually better. They understand radio doesn’t have a picture to watch and want you to ‘see’ the action.
Younger guys are dreaming of TV jobs, or angling for syndicated sports talk shows. They want to be stars, so the game becomes secondary.
Then there are the jack-donkeys like Hawk...
That's a perfect illustration of why those of us who grew up sneaking our transistor radios to school with us have such a fondness for the announcers of our youth as they were our eyes on the game, even if they were terrible.
That said and drifting out of the baseball park but staying on topic...the late Gene Hart, long-time, legendary Flyers voice was THE BEST play-by-play announcer of any sport at any time.
