MICHIGAN CITY | Officials at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore announced Thursday that scientists still do not know what caused holes to appear in Mount Baldy last summer, and the popular attraction will remain closed for further study.
Nathan Woessner, 6, of Sterling, Ill., was swallowed by a hole July 12 and rescued by firefighters.
Two additional holes have appeared since July, park officials said Thursday.

To be more serious we know how this investigation is gonna turn out assuming, that is,that some Rat Party functionary is put in charge of it or is able to hijack it:
Global Warming
or
Fracking

No mystery to anyone at the park service, only to stupid journalist. Use to climb the dunes at night and watch the sunset light up the chicago skyline. Other than that living there sucked. That's what the news story is about!

That area has been target for decades for closure by eco nuts. They want people off the land. Especially OHV users.
I guess they found a way.
Soon Glamis in SoCal will develop these holes too.

I’ve been to Mount Baldy. Windy as can be there. Hang-glider fanatics aren’t going to be happy about that closure, that’s the premier take-off spot at the park.

They don't know what is causing these holes, but the solution is to raise taxes.

Hang glider do the same on this side of the lake.
Some serious dunes on lake Superior (Grand Sable) but not much room for landing at the bottom.

"Invader from Mars" is a hopelssly dated film now, but scared the hell out of me as a kid. The hero kid in it lived near some place with sand dunes. You knew bad stuff was about to happen when the sand began to funnel into a hole.
Those of us that saw it fifty or more years ago never forgot it.

My very first thought. When I saw this movie as a kid, I was afraid to walk on sand...LOL!I looked at the base of everybody's hairline for the tell-tale "X".

Sinkholes appear and disappear over the earth. They are no big deal. I live on a hill of shale...I'm safe from that particular hazard. Now, the traffic and foolish pedestrians with their headphones on and STARING at their iphones.
Ah me.
There's all kind of stuff going on at the earth's core and crust. But, you know that too.
I sometimes wish a big sinkhole would swallow up .... oh never mind! :o)
