Once a Villain, Coconut Oil Charms the Health Food World
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/02/dining/02Appe.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

A FEW years ago I noticed something odd at the health food store. There, rubbing elbows with the extra-virgin olive oil and cold-pressed canola oil was virtually the last fat I expected to see in such esteemed company: coconut oil.

The last time I checked, coconut oil was supposed to be the devil himself in liquid form, with more poisonous artery-clogging, cholesterol-raising, heart-attack-causing saturated fat than butter, lard or beef tallow.

Its bad reputation caused a panic at the concession stands back in 1994, when the Center for Science in the Public Interest put out a study claiming that a large movie-theater popcorn, hold the butter, delivered as much saturated fat as six Big Macs. “Theater popcorn ought to be the Snow White of snack foods, but it’s been turned into Godzilla by being popped in highly saturated coconut oil,” Michael Jacobson, the executive director of the center, a consumer group that focuses on food and nutrition, said at the time.

So given all this greasy baggage, what was coconut oil doing in a health food store? In fact, it has recently become the darling of the natural-foods world. Annual sales growth at Whole Foods “has been in the high double digits for the last five years,” said Errol Schweizer, the chain’s global senior grocery coordinator.

Two groups have helped give coconut oil its sparkly new makeover. One is made up of scientists, many of whom are backtracking on the worst accusations against coconut oil. And the other is the growing number of vegans, who rely on it as a sweet vegetable fat that is solid at room temperature and can create flaky pie crusts, crumbly scones and fluffy cupcake icings, all without butter.

My doctor ALWAYS asks how much coffee do I drink per day? I say a pot. He says to cut down. Next time I say two cups and he says five is OK ( a pot). So I figure if drinking MORE coffe is OK because of studies, drinking 60 beers or more a week will be OK because a study later this year will say it healthy. I’m just waiting for that study so I can tell him “AHA, asshole. I told you I was healthy! I ain’t dead yet!!”

Hi all! Thanks for this post, and the helpful stories. Made me finally get up off my lazy behind and do something - like get the jar out of the cabinet - that’s been sitting there so long I had to use an adjustable wrench to get the top off!
Tip #1 - DON’T screw the top on too tight, a light touch is all it takes.
I use “Spectrum Naturals” - everybody’s correct @ cold pressed, non-hydrogenated (non-saturated)
Someone is giving me a gift too - Carrington Farms, a big ol tub!

Many of you have mentioned sleep issues, thyroid issues, etc. I want to “give back”...

I’m blessed to have taken a “Blood Chemistry and Nutrition’ seminar from this fine lady:
http://www.youtube.com/user/merrittwellness

It was a few years ago, but the way I remember it is this:
- coco oil is a medium-chain fatty acid, therefor, the body doesn’t have to go to a lot of effort to ‘snip it apart’, and use it.
- it ‘occupies’ the neuro receptors that give us ‘carb cravings’ (lessening the carb craving)
- it provides energy to the brain, and reduces insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome/pre-diabetes

Insulin resistance>>>adrenals fire to get brain sugar>>>wakes you up>>>excess adrenal firing>>>messes with the thyroids...

It all ties in like a puzzle, and coco oil is an (if not THE) answer.
It has little taste to me, mix it in with my morning coffee.

Also, thanks for the beetroot, lecithin, and niacin tips.
Cheers!

You can get anything in Cebu for the right price. Heck, that’s where the call centers for ATT and Paypal are located.

Thanks for this. My brain clears itself at odd moments, and I’ll have no idea why I’m parked in the Walmart parking lot, or remember what the heck was I talking about just now.

If you are your loved one has Alzheimer's, and coconut oil might help, why would you worry about stupid studies?

I wish I'd known about it when my mother began having symptoms. I would have tried it without giving a flip about any stupid studies

BTW, what I didn't consider giving her was Rx pills that were known to cause liver and kidney damage.

It seems to be human nature to think simple things don't work and there has to be 5 years and millions of $$$$ and FDA approval or it won't work.

I read an article several years ago about people following and studying monkeys in the wild. They determined when the monkeys didn't feel their best. Even had headaches...and ate from the trees that aspirin ingrediants come from.

Therefore, IMO the FDA isn't any better than monkeys when it comes to pain management. :)

My husband got good advice from his VA doctor to treat his seborrhea with the ORIGINAL Head and Shoulders Shampoo and it did work. As you do, he buys the Wally Equate Medicated Dandruff Shampoo which does the job now. He thinks it is the selenium that works. He examines everything for ingredients when comparing similar or competing products. We benefit a lot from the Walmart versions. Chemistry background comes in handy for a variety of products.

I hear you, and you make a point. I guess I'm just a bit frustrated. I see a web report by Dr. A. He says do this. But then web Dr. B says do something else, all the way down to web Dr. Z.

Some of those doctors probably know what they're talking about. Others are mistaken, or are just trying to sell a book. But which are which?

Perhaps one should try a little of everything. Or is it better to trust a university study? Who knows?

Great, informative chart - thanks for posting -

and “could it be the coconut oil...”

I grew up in the 1930’s-'40’s on a north woods farm that was built by my great grandfather in 1848.

there was no electricity available - we pretty much lived as people had ‘forever’ in that we provided for the most of needs. foods etc.

We made our own lard (research lard - it's one of the healthiest fats (ORGANIC) and butter for fats. We never used olive oil, vegetable oils or Crisco.

I now use only coconut oil, my own rendered lard and organic butter. (I make ghee from butter and also mix half and half ghee and coconut oil for use on breakfast foods, potatoes etc...and/or coconut oil/butter or lard/coconut oil or lard/butter for frying.

So, If you were make a chart that showed the increased use of ‘man-made’ fats, like “oleo” = margarine, Crisco and hydrogenated fats like supermarket lard, vegetable oils, etc - I have an inkling that it would closely match the advent of Alzheimer's in this country. (Hmmm - I think I just got this weeks column almost written! thanks! :)

I had the same problem for years.

I now use coconut oil - but also, TIME RELEASE Melatonin - 5mg - get online from Swansons’

I had used the regular meletonin which got me to sleep - but popped awake again mid-morning - now sleep through.

I’ve read that In taking melatonin, it’s suggestd to use only the 3mg if using regular and 5mg on time - as anything over that strength is wasted in the body -
