For something not quite so messy, try spraying any citrus-scented cleaner around the entrance. Cats don't like it. I found out how true this is when I used a lemon-scented hand cream and then tried to pet my cat. He got one whiff and backed away. Wouldn't let me near him until I washed it off. Maybe it will work for you.
