Adams and Sullivan received a marriage license from a county clerk in Colorado in 1975. Other same-sex couples To my knowledge, the Colorado Supreme Court never resolved (and will not likely resolve) the issue of whether these were lawful marriages under Colorado law. It should be noted they were plaintiffs in the
Adams v. Howerton case. Two district courts in the Ninth Circuit had actually relied on
Adams to uphold DOMA.
